Service Uniform: Barracks Cover, Bag, Headphones Questions

Alright, so after two years in IRR I am going active duty. I have to wear my Alpha's every day to work for a few months before I start TBS. I haven't worn the Alpha's since 2011 so I wanted to get some input on a few things.

First, when would I ever wear the green barracks cover over the garrison cover? Are they interchangeable (with Alpha's only, I assume, or also Bravo's)? Only reason I was thinking of getting one is that I walk a good ways, and though I picked up a used All Weather Coat, if it rains, I figured the barracks cover with a rain cover on it would be better in a downpour.

Bags: I am assuming that the new policy on being allowed to wear non-issue backpacks only applies to the camouflage utility uniform. So that leaves me with briefcases only? A duffel bag is out? Any rules on what type other than "conservative?"

Finally, part of the way I will be taking the subway. When I am seated on the subway are earbuds or headphones acceptable to wear? The only criteria I could find on the forum is "when in private" and that airplanes were considered private.

Also, should one wear a cover when heading down into the subway station. That is inside correct? Though part of the train ride is above ground . . .

Thanks, I'm sure the answers would become apparent after a week or so, but I didn't want to show up on the first day doing something disgusting.

You wear your most senior uniform when checking into any unit. Therefore, service alphas with barracks cover other than that garrison is fine for everyday and it is interchangeable with the Alphas and Bravos.

You can use an umbrella in bad weather you know.
    It's not against regs.

A duffel bag and backpack is out unless the duffel bag is for a 1 or 2 time use for transporting your uniforms to your new unit and a breifcase is most appropriate for an Officer such as yourself for everyday use.

Stay covered at all times. It's only a subway.

Please don't wear earbuds or headphones on the subway, 2 reasons.

    1. Don't you want to remain Vigilante on a subway ? I would.

    2. You are an Officer representing the United States Marine Corps. Some people might want to talk to you and if you are wearing headphone or earbuds, people might mistake it for not wanting to be bothered.

These are only my opinions and other Marines will stop by for more opinions to your questions.

    Best of luck Sir.

    Thanks, Rocky.

I'll pick up a barracks cover. However, I am all but certain that male Marines may not use an umbrella (unless escorting a female apparently, though I haven't seen this in the regulations). Check out 3035: Umbrellas
    http://www.marcorsyscom.usmc.mil/sit...CH3.htm#UR3035

There was a "scandal" not too long ago where a Marine in dress blues held an umbrella for the President, against regulations.

And I'm with you on the earbuds, was just wondering if that is a rule like not walking while talking on a cellphone.

I am also assuming there is no ear covering allowed while in service uniform if it is freezing outside, something like black 180's? I'm not too worried about it but saw there is a scarf that can be worn. I'll be doing about 40 minutes of walking each way throughout the winter.

I thought you said it was OK to use an umbrella for a female?

That scandal was a whole differant thing.

When I was with HQ 10th Marines I was the CO's driver for awhile.
I always had a black umbrella for the " Just in case " and it came in handy for the Colonel on many occasions.

The was no reg in a downpour at those times.

I don't know if there is a rule on earbuds ,earmuffs or scarves in the winter.

40 minute walk each way ? Take a Taxi, your an Officer, you can afford it

Common sense prevails in all of this.

3035. UMBRELLAS. Female Marines may carry an all-black, plain standard or
collapsible umbrella at their option during inclement weather with the
service and dress uniforms. It will be carried in the left hand so that the
hand salute can be properly rendered. Umbrellas may not be used/carried in
formation nor will they be carried with the utility uniform.
