    pass/fail or grade?

When Marines go off to special schools (combat hunter etc.) is their grade reported or just a pass/fail? Does it make any difference to their home unit?

Normally, you just pass or fail. But, in some instances your class standing can be significant. For example, at some formal schools (Intelligence is one), the class honor graduate gets first pick of available duty stations.

FYI: there is no school/class for combat hunter (no such MOS).

Yes Top there is a Combat Hunter Training Course. My son took a 3 week course at SOI West. Not an MOS, but additional/advanced training. He said he did very well, but got beat out for Honor Graduate.

Learn something new every day! Thanks for the info and congratulations to your son. When he gets back to his unit, he will be expected to pass on some of the knowledge gained at SOI West. Course sounds interesting; wish I knew what they taught there.
