    Re-enlisting Questions/LAT Moving into 0211

    Afternoon Marines,

I know I'm getting waaay ahead of myself here, but was just curious: what kind of opportunities would be open to me if I had the chance/chose to re-enlist? Would any sort of B-Billets be open to a Marine who would be finished with their first 4 years yet, or does that not come until farther down the road?

Also, if I did happen to re-enlist I've really been liking what I've read about 0211 (Counterintelligence/HUMINT Specialist) and know I'd have to LAT move to get into that MOS...would it be more beneficial to originally enlist with an intel contract or does it not matter what my PMOS is for my first 4 years?

    Muchas gracias, Marines!

It's possible you would have some reenlistment options. As for "B" billets, one of them could be the Marine Security Guard program (embassy duty) with the State Department. You would have to meet the eligibility criteria and be a volunteer (you would also have to be recommended by your Commanding Officer). Only other "B" billets I know of are DI and Recruiter. Never did either of those but did serve on the MSG program twice; both as a watchstander and later as a Detachment Commander.

Lateral moves are normally made in conjunction with reenlistment as an incentive to move out of an overpopulated MOS into an underpopulated MOS. So, there are some hoops to jump through and it can be a timing issue as well. You would also have to have the ASVAB score required for the MOS you want to move into. As popular as the intel field is, I doubt it is ever underpopulated so don't know if a lateral move into that MOS is ever an option. I would say your best bet is to go into it as your primary MOS out of bootcamp.

Besides the other qualifications for MSG and intel, you would be looking at being able to obtain a final top secret security clearance (meaning passing special background investigations).

I've never actually known an 0211 who was originally any other type of 02xx. Most I saw were either supply or infantry. So that being said, it is absolutely not essential that you request a DD contract before enlisting.
