I joined the Marine Corps on Sept 11, 1959 and graduated from Parris Island Oct 23rd 1959. My DI's were GySgt. Sabourin, Sgt. Lucas, Cpl Gonzales, and SSgt.Smith. He was the only male we saw for a long time. I was in Plt.13-A, and I cried when we graduated, because I received my EGA's. Semper Fi Sheila Hays

Dear Sheila,
Time flies, doesn't it. I'm on the "island" at least twice a week to shop or go to church. Don't know what your barracks were like back then in 4th. RTB. They are now fairly new and across from the DI School. At the end of 1963 when I arrived, I was assigned to 3rdRTB and the barracks were almost brand new. It took several years for the old wooden barracks in 1st and 2ndRTB to get torn down and replaced with concrete and brick buildings. 5thRTB came into being last year out near the rifle range. First major change since the Viet Nam era.

We were in the old wooden barracks. Went thru a hurricane down there, we slept in the upper deck. I ate C-rations, they were awful, they were in dark green cans. The windows in the barracks were all swollen and the front doors. I had a night duty with my trusty flashlight. Lo and behold, a sailor was drunk and broke into our barracks, he wanted to call his ship. He wanted me to go up to the upper deck, and wake up the NCO who was on duty. I know I was supposed to whack him with my trusty flashlight. I believe we had 8 Squadbays full of recruits. There was no way I was going to wake up the NCO. I told him he had to leave, which he eventually did. I just remember saying to him, (Sir, you are going to have to leave, sir) He was so drunk. After he left, I went up to the upper deck where another recruit was on duty, she woke up the NCO, and we had MP's there in no time. I gave them my story, I couldn't tell them what he looked like. I was still shaking because he came up behind me. I didn't even wet my pants. Semper Fi Sheila Hays
