Boot camp was condensed in early '66, barely 8 weeks for our series. I don"t think the Corps was ready for the massive influx of recruits, and as I mentioned in a previous post, about 1/3 of my platoon were draftees. There wasn't enough of anything, uniforms, rifles, etc... , but it became a source of pride that Marines (even scumbag recruits ) could make-do and overcome. Quick question- when did they survey the old "Trop" uniforms?

    The Asylum on the Island

When I was 18 yrs old and Korean War was raging, I went to Parris Island for Marine boot....we learned the hard way by WW2 DIs...if you didn't pick it up the first time, corporal punishment was in vogue and that opened your eyes fast, not to screw up...I was in "M" Co 4th Recruit Training Bn...the last row of WW2 quonset huts on road to the Rifle Range...my Senior DI was SSGT Slater...Jr DIs were Cpl Payson [a real SOB]..I think he hated himself...Cpl King and PFC Guance...none of us ever received a compliment and the day we boarded the buses for our 10 day Boot leave...the DIs were there to bid us "sayonara" with every derogatory slam and racial slur..DIs were hated in those days, but the light went on in our heads being on the Marine MLR months later, that those "hated" DIs saved our asses...they did a great job and killing America's enemies was no problem at all; whatever, I achieved in my lifetime, it all started with joining up with the United States Marine Corps [the greatest adventure of my life]...I love being a United States Marine

The immortal "Rock". Jan 2002. Flea infested hell hole with no mercy for the weak. Lost 40 pounds going from 190 to 140 in 13 weeks. Weight still off and recommend it as the best weight loss program ever. Don't give a rip what Martha Stewart or Oprah says. Made a man out of a College boy!

T.J., Hollywood, Sunset Boulevard, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Black Beach...beaches everywhere! Did anyone ever go to Zeb's Boathouse in Santa Ana? Little Mexico, Little VietNam, chasing cops in Tustin....did I say that out loud? The "Nut" Room in Tustin, Venice, Deserts and beaches a few minutes away, Orange County Raceway, Skiing a couple hours away....celebrites, movie stars and everyone has an angle! Don't forget KnottsBerry Farm!

    Yep. Hollywood sucked alright......

PLT 2082 MCRD San Diego, but we didn't have no stinking sunglasses!
    Ssgt McNeil
    Sgt Vandecar
    Sgt Cardenas
Ssgt (turned GySgt DD Large, in 3rd phase - went to MCRD Battallion) And - I've give anything to have beer and steaks with each and everyone of them today, with their families. And, I'm buying. Screamin, hard-core A-holes that they were, they turned this turd into something I will never regret. Ever.

Weight loss program? 270 the moment I hit the footprints, 15 September 1978 - 193 when I got home 13 December 78. Weak as a cat, but tougher than steel. Tried to send me to the 'fat boy PLT'. I was sent back for being too motivated.

I fuc**d up Guide in 1st phase, and paid DEARLY for it the remainder of boot camp. In final drill tho....... I marched as 1st squad leader, cause he couldn't march for squat.

And, I am proud to say, that 2 of my Boot Camp Brothers- are still Active - in the Michigan Army National Guard - as Federal Civil Service Technicians - after 25 years. They run the Aviation Maintenance portion of the Facility we all worked at - in one point in our careers.

OOHHHH RAAAAH - I believe they did it right.
