    Can I be a Marine?

I've always felt lucky to live in this country. And at the same time I've always felt like I haven't earned my stripes. I feel a need to give everything I can - I want to take the toughest road. I want to be able to say that I gave everything I could to the U.S. and that I gave more than I took. My question to any of the Marines on the forum here is, can I make it to the Corps? (BTW, I'm going to see a recruiter next week, but I can't stop thinking about this so I'm hoping to get some quicker answers).

I went to a D1 college for four years and did track. I graduated, but my GPA was low because at the time I didn't see the importance in what I was studying (Philosophy major). Now I'm 24, and I feel the calling to the Marines. I'm in very good physical condition, and despite my grades I do have good discipline. What I want to know is - will the Marines take me if they see my 2.4 GPA? Will they assume I am undisciplined? I know most college grads go to OTC, but I'm assuming I won't get into that. Will I be able to enlist normally? Thanks for any help! God bless all of you who have served.

Unfortunately, nobody will help you until you follow the sites rules and fill out your profile.

When you do, PM a squad leader and we can open this back up and explore your options.

As far as education requirements goes, a highschool diploma is all you need. Doubt anybody will even look at your college GPA since you're not looking to get commissioned as an officer. The only other score that is pertinant is your ASVAB score which will determine which occupational fields you're qualified for.

Good luck with your recruiters visit and let us know how it went. You shouldn't have any problems unless you need a tattoo waiver or something in your background you failed to mention but the low GPA is a non-issue (they wouldn't even care if you had flunked out).

Thank you for the response, that is encouraging. The only thing I forgot to mention is that I have about 5000 dollars in outstanding debt from an old dental procedure. But I assume I'll still be able to pay that off while I'm enlisted.

Thanks again. Really looking forward to my recruiter meeting.

Also, I've talked to my father about my decision and he is very proud, but I'm dreading talking to Mom, as I know she will be upset. Any advice on how to handle that? Any way to soften the blow without lying about risks/dangers.

Thank you again for your help and guidance, and thanks as Always for your service.

When you meet with your recruiter, talk to him about your mom. They are trained to deal with parent's emotions and explain the risks/benefits of military service. If your mom is receptive to the idea, have the recruiter set up a meeting with your parents. Most of the time, this will soften the blow and resolve the issues. Not saying your mom will be happy about your decision but at least she may understand better and be a little more comfortable with it.

Sounds like you got some good advice already. The only thing I will add -- make sure you stay on top of that debt. Don't let them come looking for you, or worse looking for you via the USMC -- for repayment. Plenty of people join with debt, just make sure you are managing it properly.

    Good luck

You DO NOT want to be called onto the carpet in the 1stSgt's office for a call he got from a debt collector! He will balance your checkbook for you and it will not be fun!! Saw it happen and it's not pretty.
