    Pearl harbor to tokyo bay

What provided America with the margin of victory? Japan's early sweeping victories in the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, the Dutch East Indies, Burma and China, and the capture of Wake and Guam, lent her military forces an air of invincibility early in the war. Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, commader-in-chief of the Imperial Navy's Combined Fleet, when asked for an estimate of his capabilities by Japan's Prime Minister Fumimaro Konoye, replied, :"I can run wild for six months. After that, I guarantee nothing."

Yamamoto based his prediction on America's industrial capacity. Having spent time in America as a naval attache and student at Harvard, he knew America and its people well, and knew what they were capable of doing.

"America will be the most formidable foe we have ever faced." Yamamoto cautioned his staff an the eve of Pearl Harbor. Yamamoto's prediction came true in the battle of Midway almost six months to the day after the brilliantly executed attack on America's Pacific Fleet in Hawaii.
