    Changing MOS

I originally wanted to go in as an MP, but you have to be 19, so I settled for Security Forces. I want to know if there's any chance of me being able to change my MOS to MP after 2 years, because with Security Forces, after 2 years they make you quit that job anyways and go into regular infantry, which I didn't know when I joined. Does anyone have any success stories with changing their MOS?

The best time to lateral move is upon re-enlistment. So suck it up son and enjoy the infantry.

You may be able to re-work it before you go in, but there are others who know more than me on that.

    security forces

Your MOS will not be security forces. You will be trained as an 0311 (Infantry). You will then be assigned to a Security Forces billet. Once your time is up with Security Forces, you will be sent to a regular infantry batallion.

As far as lateral moves go, you will not be eligible to make a lat move until it is time for your first re-enlistment.

    Arrow Some thoughts for you

Why would you go security forces if you have no intention of serving in the regular infantry? You get just as much training as an MP. In fact, if you look at the news or read recent conflicts and military operations involving Marines, you will see there is a lot of police-type work being done by 03's. Ever see news clips of Marine infantrymen keeping the peace? Providing humanitarian assistance to local nationals? Disarming potential terrorists or enemy operatives? Confining POWs?

I hope you don't think if you were to get an MP slot that you are getting a cruiser, with your badge and gun! Oh by the way, the MP option for enlistment means you can be given one of two MOS's, military policeman 5811, or corrections guard, 5812. As a new 5811 (first three years of service) you will be standing on gate duty, checking ID cards and saluting every blue sticker that comes your way. As a 5812, you can escort the prisoners or detainees out for daily trash collection and odd jobs around your base. On a few days you might even get to take them to the barber shop and to the exchange to buy their health and comfort items.

If you are so hell-bent on being a cop, why aren't you going to some police academy instead of joining the Marine Corps? And, if they won't hire you as a police officer, what makes you think we will? I won't get into my speech on the MP want-to-be syndrome, but many law enforcement agencies hire marines without MP experience. Why you might ask? Because the title says it all! There is no tougher job, training or military branch. And if you can be one of us, you can certainly meet anyone else's requirements or standards. If you don't believe me check out this site and member profiles and see. You can start with mine.

P.S. You can't spell Chump with out the letters MP!!!

Wow, I knew most Marines didn't like MP's, but I have never seen it expressed so well. In any event, we do need them. I also don't know why anyone would actually WANT to be an MP, it seems that would be right below cook on the open contract board. "Oh, you didn't want to pick an MOS? Well fine, you're an MP!" But in any event, this isn't answering the question.
If you sign up to be Security Forces, you will spend two years with an infantry unit. On top of that, you will not be liked by the Devil Dogs in your unit that have been there since they left SOI. They will see you as untrained and a headache. You can earn their respect, but it's like being a boot all over again. If you really, really don't want to deal with being in the infantry, then change your MOS before you leave home. Once you start training, you're locked in. If you want to be an MP, then you can simply wait a year and enlist then. Have fun saluting all the 16 year olds in their daddy's car. Have fun getting yelled at by the spouse of an officer than has never spent a day in uniform because your salute wasn't crisp enough, and have fun dealing with average Marines that are always trying to figure out a way to make your like hell.

I was there at the time.

The MP on gate duty, waving cars in and out was distracted and did not notice an "Officer" sticker on a car, and merely waived it through.

Brakes screeched, car stopped, woman in hair curlers (on her way to the base beauty shop) got out and proceeded to chew butt.

"Didn't you see that I was a woman?" "No Ma'am." "Didn't you see the Officer's sticker on the car?" "No Ma'am." "Well, what are you going to do about it?"

He rendered the two snappiest salutes I have ever seen.

    "Good Morning Ma'am."

    "Good Morning Car."

    Long story short.

    "My daddy is a Major!"

"Yes, but your daddy sleeps with your mommy, and unless you do too, I guess that's another difference between you and your daddy."

(I needed help getting out of THAT one!)

Memories are great, but we need to devote a little time each day creating new ones.
