A corpsman died Tuesday during a training exercise in Djibouti, a Navy spokesman said. Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Kyler Estrada, 21, was shot and killed during a live-fire and maneuvering night training exercise with Marines, said Lt. Cmdr. Tommy Crosby, spokesman for Expeditionary Strike Group 5.

Estrada, assigned to the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, was given first aid and taken to a medical facility and his death is being investigated, Crosby said.

The MEU’s commanding officer, Col. Michael Hudson, offered the corpsman’s family and friends the unit’s thoughts and prayers. “The loss of Doc Estrada is a tragedy felt throughout this tight-knit Navy Marine Corps team,” he said in a statement.

Estrada, from Maricopa, Ariz., enlisted in October 2009, personnel records show. After recruit training and corpsman school at Great Lakes, Ill., he reported to Field Medical Service School at Camp Pendleton, Calif. and was assigned to the 11th MEU.

On his Facebook page, he succinctly summed up his job: “Fix broken Marines,” he wrote.

Estrada’s next of kin could not be located for comment.
