    Can't decide...

Marines thanks for reading; would appreciate your input!

So I turn 18 this February and I haven't signed for a job yet. Been DEP'd for a while, and I've always planned on going in the 58xx field, but recently I've looked to 03xx for either Scout Sniper or Recon.

The main reason I wanted 58xx was because I was looking towards law enforcement (shocking, I know) after my contract ends. But recently I've been feeling called to missions in Africa after the Corps, so I'm not saying 58xx is useless, I just want something a little more combat orientated if I'm not going to jump right into law enforcement.

This is where I'm not 100%. I've signed for 4 years, and with all the training I figured I'd have what, 2, 2 1/2 years of service if I even made it into Scout/Recon? Would that be allowed, or do I need to be a career guy?

Also, people always talk about coming back with disorders (PTSD, Anxiety, depression, etc.) and I can understand it, but I doubt every one comes back with one after seeing some crazy stuff. Is there a ratio/number or a personal story dealing with this someone can throw my way?

If there's other articles relating to this I'd appreciate a link, Google always gives me Army info.

    Thanks,
    Tim

Another one who wants to go recon and sniper. I know there are many threads on this board regarding to both subjects.

No, you don't need to be a "career guy" to be a scout sniper. But I suggest you go into an 03xx field, go through your first deployment before even considering snipers. Once then, go for the sniper indoc, if you meet their requirements and even at that, they will select you if they see you fit to join them.

Combat? Most infantry jobs will see combat. Snipers and recon aren't the only ones. Also, other MOS's see combat too. And as far as PTSD and whatnot, don't worry about that. Boot camp, and MOS school should be your main focus.

As a former 5831 and then a police officer for 22 years I can tell you it doesn’t really matter. If you end up an MP that knowledge and experience will help you in the testing process, but so will a study guide. That was my plan when I joined and I ended up in corrections, so my plan didn't work quite as well as I planned. Being a grunt also has very good crossover training too. More importantly build a good resume... Good proficiency and conduct marks, physical conditioning, etc. Stay out of trouble! Specifically, DWI's, speeding tickets and things like that.

Thank you andrew5760 & usmc5831 for answering my questions.

usmc5831, from what I understand I have a good chance of being deployed in the 58xx field, from your personal experience am I going to be working gates deployed or seeing some combat?

I've read countless threads & articles but I never get a straight answer about combat. Most of the stuff I read is Army MP info, not USMC MP.

I guess you don't have to worry about boot camp, be a sniper or go into recon first boot camp comes later, lol,Semper Fidelis.

My personal experience as a 5831, Correctional specialist was in the 80’s so the farthest I was deployed was the Brig at Quantico. Sorry I can’t be more help. If you want to be a Marine, expect to be deployed… That way when you do get deployed you don’t say, but I’m admin!

As far as scout sniper/recon goes; you need to concentrate on becoming a good infantryman first. Chances are you won't even make it into either.

Most people with combat experience have some feelings about it. It will change you forever, but its not all (or always) bad.

I know many law enforcement officers with various military backgrounds (e.g. aviation, administration, logistics, tanks, etc.).

Missions in Africa after the Corps? What are you talking about specifically?

Grunts are men of action. Get out of your head and friggin take some if you want to be one!

First of all, I've read a ton of articles over the past few months and haven't found an answer for either of my two clear questions, so that's why I posted. What's with people like you getting all high horse? I didn't post in Ask A Marine to get that reply.

Thanks for the reply, and by missions in Africa I mean a Christian missionary. And I like that last statement, haha.

Ok, maybe I am missing the connection here. What do infantry and christian missions in Africa have to do with each other?

You have a great chance of being deployed in the Marine Corps. They pretty much send everyone over sometime in their career.

I can't speak from a MP standpoint, but the fact you were in the military, especially the Corps, will put you a step ahead of your peers. As for the recon part, go in wanting to be recon, but expect to be infantry. Recon training is no joke, at MCT we got to see some motivated Recon marines literally run up and down hills twice the size we were going up, with even more weight in their packs.

As for how long your enlistment is, I can't say for sure, but there are a few MOS's that take nearly a year to complete schooling for, and they make you throw another year onto your enlistment for those. I would assume it is the same for Recon as their have to go through ITB before even starting recon training and that alone is 3 months long.
