    Question About Joining

    Hello,
I'm nearing my final semester of county college, I will have an associates degree in Criminal Justice. I plan on joining the USMC as soon as i finish with college. My question is, I want the MOS 0331 (Machine Gunner), I was told by my recruiter that i need to be reserves to choose my MOS. Would it be possible to "beat the system" and join the reserves and then switch directly to active duty with that 0331 mos?

Thank you for taking your time to read and answer this.

The answer to that Question is "NO". You do pick your MOS for Reserves because you are being assigned to a specific billet and job with a particular Unit. Active Duty assigns Programs (groupings of MOS's), in your case would be the UH or HH Programs for the 0300 field. If you ship Reserve you stay reserve until such time that you can put in to go active, usually after your first contract is fulfilled. You can NOT change your Status while in Recruit training.
