    District Level Waiver.

    Hello, my name is Shane.

I know the subject of Moral Waivers has been covered before, but I couldn't find any case quite like mine. I've read the sticky about them, and now I'm just seeking a few Marines oppinions on my case.

First off so you know where I am coming from; a little information about me. My father is a Marine who served three tours in Vietnam as a sniper. He is a decorated veteran and my absolute role model. I am also a member of the Society of the Cincinnati(First son of the first son and so on of the officers who served under George Washington during the winters at Valley Forge). So my family has a long line of service to America.

I have always wanted to be a Marine but I screwed up, and messed around when I was a kid/young adult. I recieved my GED when I was 17 after dropping out, like an idiot. When I was 18 almost 19 I contacted a recruiter about joining the Marine Corps and doing something with my life, I was told that I would need 15 college credits to qualify. I worked full-time and put myself through 15 credit hours in two semesters. All the while keeping in close contact with my future recruiter.

I have since filled out all of the paper-work and gone to MEPS.
I scored a 70 AFQT on my ASVAB and fully Medically qualify.

To the point of this post: I have a total of 5 non-traffic violations on my criminal record, along with three minor-traffic tickets.

4 MIC's(Minor In Consumption) and one Curfew Violation
No proof of insurance, Speeding(10mph), Suspended plate.

That means that I need a District Level Waiver.

My recruiter seems to think that I shouldn't have any problem getting one.
I've already put my waiver packet together and it's been sent up, I'm waiting on an approved or denied.

My question is: What do you think my chances are of getting approved for this waiver? I'm aware that waivers are rare, but my recruiter and two of the Gunny's at MEPS seemed to think that this would be an easy waiver to get and I should have no problem. Everything I've read online about Moral Waivers is drug related, or for more serious offenses.

Any help or personal experience would be awesome. Thank-you for your time Marines.

    With Respect,
    Shane G.

well shane i think if you want to be a marine bad enough you will do the footwork needed to get your foot in the door to go to boot.. being a marine is not an easy job and is not just handed to anyone. you need to work your ass off for it whether its to enlist, completing bootcamp or staying in the corps. only you can decide your fate on becoming one of the few and the proud. you should first try calling them to see if they have reviewed your package and if they have denied you find out other paths you can take to get into the corps. that is the best advice i can give you

Thank-you for you answer and advice Sir! I've been pressing hard at this. They saw the drive that I had and detication that I showed through the entire year before I was eligible to join at all, with my GED. They sent me up to MEPS within a week; which I've heard normally takes a lot longer in my area. As far as I know my waiver was held because of a wrong date on one of the tickets. It just needs to be corrected and my recruiter is finding out if I need to go up MEPS to correct that. I guess it hasn't left our command yet? As far as I can tell It's moving pretty fast though, it's only been a week since it was sent up. My recruiter said that it's a good sign that they are entertaining it. I've gotten to the point where I've stopped pestering my recruiter about it because I know it's out of his hands and these things take time. I am just wondering if there is an average to time it takes waivers to go through? I'm glad becoming a Marine isn't easy, if it was it wouldn't mean as much! I'm just hoping that I get the chance to prove myself and EARN the title of United States Marine!

I had to get a waiver for traffic violations and I didn't have much of a problem. I know my recruiter had to jump through a few hoops to get it for me because he had to get a police record from 3 different states. I still apperciate what he did, I was stuck sitting at MEPS for 2 days waiting for the waiver. But once he was able to prove that I didn't have a warrent and everything was closed the waiver was no problem. That is my particular situation so I can't say what you will have to do as I only had minor traffic violations (but I did have quite a few). Good Luck!

As you may or may not know, the Corps is cutting back on personnel. In this business it is a hurry up and wait approach, so it appears you will have to go with the flow. Would have been easier if you had asked your dad.

District level waivers like this are very easy to get. Usually we are able to get them approved the same day that we submit them. The one holdup for you could be the fact that you have a GED and not a traditional High School Diploma.

Thanks SSgt! Not that I think that any of the Marines I spoke to were lying to me; a Marine never lies. I just thought they may have been optimistic and trying to motivate me! Thank-you GySgt, I understand that it's my own fault that I'm in this position and if I need to wait longer then other able recruits, that's fine by me. I should have clairified, my father is(was) a Marine. He's been out for almost 40 years now. Plus his last tour was in the Army; he wanted to get medals for what he was doing every day I guess . Worked out though with his first field promotion from Sgt. to 1st Lt. and his second posting on seperation leave to Captain. Along with 2 bronze stars(he got the first one in the Corps). To the point he has been supportive but he was unsure about this as well.

Actually, I think your chances are decent. It sounds like just 'dumb kid' stuff, although the dropping out was kinda stupid (as you now realize of course) and probably the WORST decision you made.

I don't think you are a felon or a knucklehead, just a typical rambunctious lad. You'll probably get an approval.

    But...keep your nose clean..

dont let them fool ya recruiters lie lol but even with being lied to alot by my recruiter it was worth it. they told me boot camp would be a peice of cake told me ide get a bonus and guarenteed infantry spot as a 0331 machine gunner. instead i got no bonus boot camp was hard as hell, and im a 0431 embarkation specialist but i cant complain bc i love being a marine and thats what its all about in the end brother. stick to your goal and claim that title. i hope to see u on here within the next couple months with Marine status instead of Poolee/DEP or Marine Friend. good luck to you

Thanks for your support, Marine! I'll earn the title! Got an update, I'm headed back up to meps to fix a date on one of my arrests. Then it shouldn't be long before I know!

Thanks for the vote of confidence Sgt. I've seen you as pretty critical of waiver applicants, so the fact that you think I have a shot means a lot! I'll keep you updated on the waiver! Hopefully soon I'll be requesting to change my status to DEP/Poolee!

    Thanks again for your time,
    Shane G.

Just a quick update: One of the dates on my MIC's was wrong (I only had 3 of the 4 tickets on file) the one I didn't have I gave an around date and I must have been off; to the point where they need me to come up to MEPS to change it. I guess I have to talk with a Doctor about it? That's what I was told.

    I love MEPS
