Two from Lejeune arrested with stolen ammo, weapons, gear

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. — Two Camp Lejeune Marines were arrested this weekend in York, S.C., with $25,000 worth of stolen government weapons, ammunition and equipment, authorities said.
Lance Cpl. John David Stocks and Lance Cpl. Charles Anthony Rohrl, both 19, left the base about a week ago without permission, said Naval Criminal Investigative Services agent Michael Monroe. They were found in a home Saturday after police got a tip.

Stocks, a York native, is assigned to the armory of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, where he helped issue, maintain and safeguard the unit’s weapons, said Staff Sgt. Pauline Franklin, a Camp Lejeune spokeswoman.

Rohrl is a basic infantryman with the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, which is assigned to 2nd Marine Division, Franklin said.

Federal charges against the men are pending, authorities said.

They are accused of taking one M-16 A2 rifle, three M-9 pistols, two shotguns, ammunition for the three firearms, two K-Bar knives and three pairs of night vision goggles, Franklin said.

Two accused of weapons theft to face charges

    Associated Press

YORK, S.C. — Two Marines arrested over the weekend for allegedly stealing military weapons will likely face charges including desertion, officials said.
The pair had been missing from Camp Lejeune since Oct. 20.

The two were disillusioned with the military and apparently just left and came home, said York Police Chief Bill Mobley.

“Unauthorized leave is one thing, but the biggest thing is the larceny of the weapons,” Mobley said. “That is a very serious offense. It’s understandable that they got disillusioned, but when you leave, you don’t steal weapons.”

At least one of the weapons recovered can fire multiple rounds, Mobley said. “In the wrong hands, it could have been a very serious situation,” the chief said.

The weapons were worth about $25,000, according to detective John Naylis.

“There is no indication they tried to sell anything,” Naylis said. “They literally came straight home.”

Military authorities are expected to arrive in York on Tuesday. When they do, city police will drop charges against the pair, Naylis said, because federal authorities will likely file their own charges including desertion and theft of government property.

The two men are Lance Cpl. John D. Stocks, 19, a weapons specialist assigned to the to the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, and Lance Cpl. Charles A. Rohrl, 19, an infantryman assigned to 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment.

The former high school classmates failed to report for duty on Oct. 20. They were taken into custody peacefully by South Carolina authorities Saturday.

Missing from the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit armory were one M-16A2 automatic rifle, three M-9 pistols, two shotguns, ammunition for each of the weapons, two K-bar knives and three pairs of night vision goggles, a spokesman at Camp Lejeune said.

Two Camp Lejeune Marines arrested Saturday in South Carolina in connection to the theft of military weapons, were returned to Camp Lejeune on Wednesday.

Sgt. Spencer Harris with the Lejeune Public Affairs Office, said Lance Cpl. John D. Stocks, 19, a weapons specialist with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit and Lance Cpl. Charles A. Rohrl, 19, an infantryman assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment were placed in the brig upon their arrival at Lejeune. They were arrested in their hometown, York, S.C.

"Charges have not yet been filed," Harris said. "They are in pretrial confinement."

The two former classmates of York Comprehensive High School had been missing since Oct. 20, as was an M-16A2 automatic rifle, three M-9 semiautomatic pistols, two shotguns, ammunition for each of the weapons, two K-bar combat survival knives and three pairs of night vision goggles.
