    A North Carolina-based sailor was killed Thursday while deployed to Afghanistan, the Defense Department said Saturday.

    Hospitalman Riley Gallinger-Long, 19, of Cornelius, Ore., died while conducting a dismounted patrol in the Marjah district in Helmand province. He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 6th Marines, Regimental Combat Team 1, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

    No further information was immediately available.
