How are you supposed to call off the ranks properly?

Like, if they ask you what "E-9" is, what is the proper way to say it?

E-9 is either a Master Gunnery Sergeant, Sergeant Major, or Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps. You address people by their rank, not their paygrade. Paygrade is the letter and number combination. You can find rank charts all over the internet.
Somehow I feel like I'm not grasping your question.

This is the way I would describe an E-9:

Sir/Ma'am an E-9 is either a Master Gunnery Sergeant Sergeant Major. Both wear three chevrons up and four down; a Master Gunnery Sergeant has a bursting bomb in the center and a Sergeant Major has a five point star in the center.

Here is a list of the way I memorized them.

    E1 - Private: Nothing
E2 - Private First Class: 1 chevron. Lowest rank which pins on chevrons.
E3 - Lance Corporal: 1 chevron up, cross rifles in the middle.
E4 - Corporal: 2 chevrons up, cross rifles in the middle.
E5 - Sergeant: 3 chevrons up, cross rifles in the middle.
E6 - Staff Sergeant: 3 chevrons up, 1 rocker down, cross rifles in the middle. E7 - Gunnery Sergeant: 3 chevrons up, 2 rockers down, cross rifles in the middle.
E8 - Master Sergeant: 3 chevrons up, 3 rockers down, cross rifles in the middle.
E8 - First Sergeant: 3 chevrons up, 3 rockers down, diamond in the middle.
E9 - Master Gunnery Sergeant: 3 chevrons up, 4 rockers down, bursting bomb in the middle.
E9 - Sergeant Major: 3 chevrons up, 4 rockers down, 5 point star in the middle.

    Hope this helps!

^^^That's how I have learned it too. Both are correct, but munkyvsrobot has said it just how I have learned to recite it and from what I hear that's how it's done in boot camp. Might as well learn it that way now seeing as boot camp is what we need to be ready for next.

Does anyone know how drill sergeants would like us to call the stripes. Should they be called chevron's and rockers or stripes up and down.
