Hey boys & girls, want a real role model to learn about and attempt to emulate? No I’m not talking about some crack head rock star I’m talking about Lt Michael Murphy.

Lt. Murphy was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, the United States military’s highest decoration, for heroism for his actions in 2005 in Afghanistan in the area of Asadabad. No, you don’t receive the Medal of Honor for the best dressed at some drama tv award show. You receive it for things like this.

On May 7th Lt Murphy would have been 35 years old. He had been through specialized training, visited numerous countries only to receive the Medal of Honor by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty as the leader of a special reconnaissance element with Naval Special Warfare Task Unit Afghanistan.

Now six years later the USS Michael Murphy, the 62nd ship of the Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, named in honor of Lt. Murphy was christened at Bath Iron Works.

Following tradition, Murphy’s mother cracked a bottle of champagne against the hull of the USS Michael Murphy.

“Happy Birthday, son!” Murphy’s mom said on what would have been her son’s 35th birthday.

You can go through life and look up to “idols” on TV or sports players. Unfortunately, neither of those “idols” are ever put into the situation where if required they will gladly lay down their own life for a fellow “idol”. Well in Lt Murphy’s case, many didn’t look at him as an “idol”, many didn’t even know his name. Now all that has changed and even at sea, they will know and once again fear Lt Michael Murphy.

God Bless all of those that gave all....

    Time for a Cigar!
