In the early 1970s I had a poem published in Leatherneck Magazine entitled "The Nation's Best", under Gyrene Jingles, remember that monthly feature?

Here they come in perfect line,
All in step, in uniforms fine
They carry their heads above the rest
With pride, for they're the Nation's Best

The drums beat softly as if they were one
People stand tall, every father and son
For they know that there is none to compare
With the U.S. Marines, anyplace, anywhere

I didn't expect Leatherneck to publish it, but they did. Must not have had many contributions that month in whatever year it was, sometime in the early 1970s or so. I got out in 1967 so I must have been waxing nostalgic when I wrote it. LOL.
