Another "Which MOS"..thread.

First off, sorry in advance. I know that there are thousands of these threads out there (seeing as I've already gone through 20 pages) but I'm in a bind and am looking for any advice I can get.

Since January I have been in the DEP for Intel, I was good to go.

A week or two ago our new NCO lets me know that that I can no longer hold the DD contract because my family are dual citizens (USA & Canada) and I will not be able to obtain a top-secret scii clearance. Oh well, water under the bridge I suppose..

Anyways. I am COMPLETELY lost. I was trying to figure out what MOS I was going to go into before I enlisted and this was the one that most peaked my interest..it still is, but I digress.




I have no idea what I truly want to do for the next 4-5 years of my life. I have ruled out:

• Admin & Legal services
• Most Infantry/"Frontline" Mos'
• Any type of Linguist (Failed the DLAB by 2% lol)
• Financial & Food services

These for the most part do not interest me, call me what you want, but infantry is not for me.




What I am interested in:

• Logistics
• AG Contract - Crew chief/flight crew
• Swinging in the wing :cool:
• MP
• *Possibly* Supply
• CBRN

If I could take a guess at what I wanted to do with my life, it would be something in the Federal sector..but I know that my future aspirations will surely change with time. For all I know I'll spend my life in the Corps.




What I'm looking for in my MOS:

• Something that will challenge/occupy my mind
• Something that might translate into the civilian world
• Something that will give me the opportunity to be stationed in various locations
• Something that will give me my fair share of hard ship and troubles.
• An opportunity to have some fun during my enlistment

If anyone get provide me with some experiences, knowledge, or general advice in how to narrow these down..I would be very appreciative. I know that everyone's enlistment is different, but your experience can at least give me a rough outline of what I could come to expect from that MOS.

Look into the Aviation MOS's. Structural repair, Flight line, and even the AG contract, will all give you what it looks like you are looking for. I don't think you'll regret it.

This may be rhetorical, but have you shared with your recruiter the information in your thread?

I joined at 17 and had a good idea what I didn't want to do but not as much what I wanted to do. In conversations with my recruiter, he made some suggestions, and then I made a pick.

I'd start there.

I used to, thats actually where I got the idea of CBRN (2 of my recruiters MOS), but after a while I realized that they were either starting to lie, or had very outdated information.

For instance relating to MP, they had me convinced that it would be a very fun job for me when I left the office. I was told that they took care of policing military bases, when in reality, these jobs are now being given to civilian law enforcement..or the DoD..something along those lines. There main duties are convoy security, working in corrections facilities etc.

I might get rough ideas of what the MOS does from my recruiter, but for the fine print I look elsewhere. Like here :thumbup:

And in regards to Sgt Leprechaun, I'll most definitely look into "Wing" related MOS', they have always peaked my interest.

I did garrison and field MP work in the Corps and in the Air Guard. Field MPs are basically Infantry Lite. As you said, convoy escort, EPOW handling, perimeter security, law enforcement in the field, things like that. In my time garrison work was like working for a civilian PD (sorta).

I had some fun doing field MP work, but I confess I much preferred garrison work as it was what I wanted to do and had finagled to get. I did not really enjoy my primary MOS (truck driver). It worked out for me as I had a successful LE career in both the military and civilian life.

But you got to do what makes you happy, not me, not your recruiters.

Aircraft Mech option 62XX. You can end up almost any where and working on anything, you wont have much of an idea until at the end of your A school of what you will be working on. I work on the F/A 18D's on the engines and I could say I actually love my job. Ive only been in a year and a half and the things I get to do and the responsiblity place on me is more then any other kid that I grew up with. If you have any questions about the schooling for engine mech or even airframes which is the other half of the 62XX field send me a PM and ill answer any question you have. Take care

EDIT: Working on jets in the Corps you get alot of experience that will translate into the real world and can land you a job that pays extremely well.

I went to talk to my recruiter today, and got incredibly terrible news..

The only contracts available to me are: Supply & Accounting, Communications & Electrical and various infantry slots (Motor T, 0311, Security Forces).

I am at a complete loss..will any of these suit me? The more I look into supply/comm the more I really start to despise the thought of doing it for the next 4 years..

Oh, and seeing as I dep'ed in January 3rd, pushing it back until better options open up would mean exceeding the year long limit and me having to drop out.

On top of that I believe that there is a year long waiting period before you can re-enlist.

I hate to sound rude or blunt, but the choice is yours. Neither I, or any other Marine here, knows what you are suited for. Only you have a clue.

I was Motor T to start my Marine Corps career. Personally, I did not like it, but many others do. I was never in an infantry MOS, but I did a lot of running around in the field as an MP and later in Air Force Security Police. I had fun with that, although I preferred garrison policing. Security Forces is jazzed-up security guards at sensitive facilities (although you start with an infantry MOS).

Supply/Accounting is mostly paperwork and inside work.

Your call.

Comm/Electric..is that Air Wing?

Comm and Electrical transitions very well into civilian life. I work with two guys who were in variations of those fields in different branches of the service, and they are very highly paid electrical technicians now. Just about any technical field does well on the outside, but you can't overlook anything that will get your foot in the door. These days, too much emphasis is put on using the Corps as a prep school for a future career, when the reality is that it is a branch of the military whose purpose is to meet the needs of our nation, and a Marine's sole purpose is to meet the needs of the Corps. A little update, I ended up going with comm.

With supply/accounting, there was a great chance I would be stuck inside at a desk doing paperwork or doing inventory for 4 years. From my point of view with comm the most unfavorable mos I could get would be either field operator or some oddball electrician mos, both still seem like they would be mildly interesting.

And to Sgt. Leprechaun, it is not specifically air wing, but if they have comm equipment I do believe there is a chance that I could be stationed there depending on my specific mos.

I actually just noticed that the CC contract for supply has the option for you to be put into:
6000 - Aircraft Maintenance
6600 - Aircraft logistics

Interesting..nevertheless, I believe I chose the right field. Now I just have to hope/prey/beg for 0651 :marine:
