US marines have engaged Muslim guerrillas in the Philippines for the first time since they were deployed there as part of the war on terrorism six months ago. Military spokesmen said there were casualties among the rebels, believed to be from the Abu Sayyaf movement, but it was not clear whether they were deaths or injuries.
