Military Biography:
I enlisted in May of 1970, and completed recruit training at Parris Island, SC in August. A knee-injury during I.T.R. at Camp Geiger aggravated an old pre-enlistment patella-fracture, causing my training to be interrupted many times for cortisone injections. A.I.T. at Stone Bay was more of the same, but I complete my advanced infantry training. A month later, I reported to Staging Battalion at MCB Camp Pendleton as an 0311 with orders for Ground-Forces, WESTPAC. At our pre-deployment processing, there was no quota available, so I was diverted to MCB CAMPEN. I learned about a vacancy in the Staging Battalion Mail Room, and the Company Commander approved of my becoming a Mail Orderly (0161). My knee continued to bother me, and eventually, my condition rose to the attention of an orthopedist, who declared that with my history of having fractured my kneecap almost two years earlier in civilian-life, I should never have been accepted for enlistment into the Marine Corps. I didn’t want to leave the service, but with months of medical-hold ahead of me, where I would be ineligible for promotions and/or leave; and with the likelihood that when I eventually got a hearing, I would probably be separated without being eligible for any disability benefits, based on a condition diagnosed as “EPTE” (existing prior to enlistment). After weighing the alternatives, I reluctantly decided to accept an Honorable Discharge in 1971.
