- Military Biography:
- Flunked out of US Naval Academy 1970, enlisted in Army a week later. Made rank up to Cpl as infantryman. On the way to Vietnam, 1970, was accepted into Warrant Officer Flight School. Graduated 1971, went to Vietnam as a Cobra Pilot. First 1/2 of tour spent supporting MACV-Studies and Observation Group (SOG), Command and Control North (CCN) on missions across the border monitoring Ho Chi Minh trail. Extensive combat during the Easter Offensive 1972 supporting Army of Vietnam. Returned from RVN Aug 1972, assigned C 7/1 Cav Ft. Knox KY. ETSed out of Army 1974, finished college, then joined USMC. Flew Cobras, AH-1J, AH-1T, AH-1T (TOW), AH-1W. Made several Mediterranean Amphibious Ready Group/Marine Amphibious (later changed to Expeditionary) Unit cruises, USS Iwo Jima (LPH 2), USS Guadalcanal (LPH-7) x 2, USS Nassau x 2 (1977-1985). 2nd ANGLICO, 1981, jumped with 82nd Airborne, 2/75 Ranger Bn, Spanish Airborne Brigade, served with Turkish Naval Infantry & Portuguese Marine Corps. Transfered to China Lake, Operational Test Pilot with Navy VX-5, 1985-88. Next was assigned as the Naval Air Systems Command Program Manager Representative with Israel Aircraft Industries, Yehud, Israel. A combined engineering and manufacturing development program to put a FLIR system and laser designator on both IAF and USMC Cobras (1988-91). Spent Gulf War I there. Next assignment was as AH-1/UH-1 Program coordinator, Aviation Branch, HQMC, 1991-1993. Transferred to Camp Pendleton to command USMC Reserve Attack Helicopter Site, 1993-95. 1995-96 attended Top Level School. Returned to California where I spent a year as 3rd MAW inspector, a year as I MEF Air Officer, then one more year as 1st Marine Division Air Officer (1996-1999). Was next assigned Deputy G-3, III MEF Okinawa. From there went to East Timor, assumed command of US Forces, International Forces East Timor. Stood that down, established US Support Group East Timor providing Humanitarian Assistance. Returned to Oki, retired Apr 2001.
