Can I be denied deployment if I want to go?

There is an upcoming deployment that I want to go on to afghanistan. I talked to the Co. of the batallion going and he said yes i can go with him, but my gunny is telling me no i cannot even tho i've been by name requested by the Co. Can the gunny tell me no?

Any feedback or personal experience would be greatly appriciated
