Military Biography:
For my 4-year enlistment, I was a "Small Computer Systems Specialist" MOS# 4066 (which doesn't exist anymore). So, yes, I was a "computer pouge". The tasks included maintaining the LAN/servers of my unit as a network admin in the NOC and providing tech support for all the PC's, peripheral devices, and cabling that were attached to it, which meant going out on a lot of "trouble calls" to fix the computers, printers, copy machines, and LAN lines of Marines in many other platoons on a daily basis as well as providing assistance over the phone whenever someone couldn't get to their email, shared drives/printer, and/or the internet from any workstation in their shop. We were also in charge of the encryption devices that were used to secure all the data on our network and configuring laptops for use on deployments. That's what we did in garrison. In the field we would have to build TCP/IP networks from scratch for use by other Marines on a deployment. We also performed a lot of misc hardware/driver installations, configured software, formatted hard drives and reloaded computer OS's as needed. We were pretty much the "jack-of-all-trades" of Marines in the IT department, because we had to do so much and learn most of the skills we needed while troubleshooting the various problems we were called on to take care of. We also had to be on-call 24/7 in case any of the servers went down and passed around a beeper that would go off any time that happened. My job was pretty challenging at times, and demanding, but for the most part I enjoyed it. At my last duty station, our motto was "It might be Hell, but we have the admin rights!" They were just about to get rid of my MOS at the time I was EASing in '02, so I was one of the last Marines to serve as a 4066. Contrary to what some might think, our job was not very lax, but since some apparently thought so, we got to play games a lot. If I had to do it over again, I would probably join Motor-T. Oorah!
