  1. 69-70. S-2 Scout/Sniper. I started out as an 0331, machine gunner, but was selected to attend Vietnamese language school. That changed everything.

There is another web sight called Together We Served. My profile is in there with many photos of the past and present.

Good luck to you. Stay the hell out of trouble until your ship date. You are in for the experience of a life time once you get to boot camp.

  8. Nice to me you Bob. Likewise, we walked the same ground together back in the day. In two weeks I am re-uniting with 5 other S-2 Scout/Snipers in Tampa. It's been 40 years since we were all together. Try going into "Together We served". Its a great web site. You can use the site for 10 days of free access once you enter a profile. Its great for searching for old friends you served with in the Corps.

  10. Small world. If you go into Together We Served, you will see a rememberance I posted for Gunny Perez. As an S-2 Scout, I bounced around from line company to line company. It was not unusual for me to be with two or three different line companies in one day. Whenever I was with Charlie Company I made sure I was clean shaven and squared away even though I only had to answer to the skipper of whatever company I was with . Gunny Perez had a reputation as the toughest NCO in all of 1/7. One of my most vivid memories of Gunny Perez was when Charlie Company came back to the rear at Baldy. The company was lined up in formation and the Gunny was going up and down the line smacking guys for whatever it was that ****ed him off. I had come in to the rear with Charlie Company and watched what he was doing from the S-2 Hootch about 50 yards away. He scared the **** out of everyone. About a month later is when he died. My recollection is that a bobby trap was found and he picked it up and tried to throw it and it went off and killed him. At least this is what we heard anyway.

Likewise, I spent many a night out on the penninsula and the entire area from Hill 88 to the penninsula on the 4-5 man S-2 Scout patrols we ran. We had four kills as Scout/Snipers. One was a VC paymaster we got on the penninsula. We brought his body back to Hill 88. Two other were buried at the penninsula and one fell into the South China Sea. I kept a diary during my entire tour. You may be referring to one night when four of us had just set in for the night and it began raining. No moon at all. 27 VC walked right in front of us and we called in an Arty stike from Hai Van. A reaction force came out from Hill 88 to get us. I went back to Viet Nam last year with another Scout. My TWS profile has many photos of Hill 88 back then and what it looks like now as well as the Penninsula. 2/26's outpost on Hai Van is now a Republic of Viet Nam military base as is LZ Baldy and we could not get to see what it looks like now. If you want something to reminice about, check out my TWS photos. Search for Picariello and it will bring you there. Do you remember anyone from 2/26 that was named "Angel"? A blonde kid who volunteered to go out with us one time on a Scout patrol. I heard he was killed by friendly fire while going out on a night ambush. By the way, the railroad tracks are still there. You are right, we humped the same ground. If you can reply through TWS because it is easier to send messages. I will list you as a brother in TWS. It will be my honor.
