MMA you live close to me ,I am in Churchill .Are you involved with the Marine Corps League? I was thinking of joining .There is one in Monroeville I think.

  2. I was with 1st Radio Battalion in Vietnam. I got there after a tour in the Phillipines so I was there pretty late and we were pulled out with the last of the ground troops in 1971. I like Corpsmen better than Officers, anyway. An Officer never gave me an unreported shot of penicillin to cure the clap.

John.....I tried to apologize to the Lt., but I guess he's determined! When I looked at his Profile, I understood why what I said, threatened him. TRULY.....I was just teasing! Sorry that he took it seriously. What unit were you with in Nam?.....Doc Greek
  4. Well the trout fishing in Turtle Creek was always pretty much "put and take" fishing anyway. After May there weren't too many trout in there anyway and one year back in the late 80's I remember seeing a big Musky or Pike cruising up there and there were hawks or other predatory birds always flying around there so I guess the ones that aren't caught around opening day are eaten by other predators. You wouldn't recognize the area now with all of the steel mills shut down. I haven't been river fishing for a while but I went quite a bit in the late 80's and early 90's. It's probably not a good idea to eat anything from the Monongahela because of the heavy metal residues that are still there and there are still a lot of small steel mills operating along the rivers but when I was last fishing there you couldn't even see minnows because the white bass population exploded and ate nearly every minnow in the Mon. It was real good fishing but you had to travel across town to buy minnows or shiners. The channel cats would hit them almost as soon as they would hit the water.

There goes the fishing in Turtle Creek because of the gasoline spill in Murrysville! They said it will take a couple of years to come back.
    Have a great Thanksgiving.
  6. In the summer of 1968 we jack-hammered out tar from the liquor bins doubling out as laborers. We had to cut it into squares with the jack-hammers and then shovel it out. I made a heck of a lot of money that year on overtime. The guy you knew may have been Ernie. As I recall he had gray hair and would have been in his 30's at the time.

My Dentist had an office in Elizabeth, PA and when I had an appointment I'd pass the Clairton Mill and the smell is still there.

If Toth had blond hair, I knew a Whitey Toth from North Braddock who played
foootball for Scott High School. I did construction work on a new tar pit at
Clairton mill and that smell there was something else. I was trying to upload
my boot camp picture in my profile but wasn't successful, I'll have to see if
my wife can do it. That's a good reason for the Phillipine preferance. I got
frostbite in 3 fingers and it shows up everytime it gets cold. Take care
  8. The main reason I liked the Phillipines better was money. You didn't need much of it in the Phillipines but you did in Hawaii. I didn't mind the heat but I don't know how you guys could stand the cold. I can take it for a while hunting or fishing but I can't imagine living in it for months like you guys had to. I worked with a U.S.M.C. vet from Korea after high school at the Coke works in Clairton, PA and he told me about the cold. His name was Ernie Toth as I recall.

Hi John I don't fish but I am surprised Turtle Creek is clean enough to fish in.
I spent a lot of time in Swissvale and remember Porky Chedwick dances at St.
Boneventure church. Turtle Creek is a ghost of itself now. I used to hunt, but no more. I am curious why you liked Phillipines over Hawaii? I know Vietnam
was no bargain. I complained about the cold in Korea, but I wouldn't like the
jungle heat either. Can't win huh! Semper Fi pi 53
  10. They tore down Munhall H.S. years ago. When I was there (Class of '67) we had losing teams mostly because of the new (then) West Mifflin Schools. I live in Swissvale now, where my wife is from and I'm very familiar with Turtle Creek. Believe it or not, they stock trout in the creek now but I've only fished it for carp and catfish.
