Trying to go into the active reserves

Posted 06-23-09 at 07:09 PM by KathrynG
I'm wanting to go into the AR, but I'm having trouble finding a good contact number for a PSR. I have searched the internet, and called a couple of RS but haven't gotten anywhere... I would appreciate some guidance, Thanks

What area of the country are you in? Lastly, your best bet is to use your reserve chain of command. Tell them you need to call the Regimental PSR.

When I was looking, I just went to the local recruiter and he had the info. It wasn't for me simply because I would have had to travel too far (150) miles) to make drills. Ended up joining the local Army National Guard. The almost 3 hour drive didn't affect me until my clutch went out and I was stuck 150 miles from the house late on Sunday afternoon in strange town. After that I was certain that long distance drilling wasn't for me.

I'm having the same problem. Seems like some recruiters are not that connected to the prior-service guys. But if you find your closest reserve unit they should have some good info available to you.

Your best bet is the prior service recruiter. You can find your local PSR here. These recruiters are specially tasked with helping prior service Marines apply for programs such as AR or EAD.

It's not just getting in, and I am assuming you are talking MC Res, but if you can find a drill center near you. I left the Corps as a Gunny, but there was no reserve center near enough to me and I ended up having to join the Army National Guard.

The closest MC center was over 150 miles away. (1) 6 hours on the highway (both-ways) (2) Was basically forced to spend Saturday night in a place I didn't want to be (3) had a the choice of paying for a motel room in town or sleeping on a cot in a spare room. I did have the option of driving both ways both day, but getting up at to leave at 0400 and putting all those miles on the car didn't seem like an option at all.

Army Reserves-I first joined the AR. The unit was located 45 miles from the house, but in a different state. Why do I mention it was in a different state? That state wanted me to pay state income take on my military pay...my state didn't. Secondly, when joining the AR I had to give up 1 stripe and reverted to SSgt Third, I really did not want to be in a company of Army Drill Instructors so I left after 1 year and joined the
Army National Guard...I had to give up another stripe, but I had the choice of a dozen different places to go and I could get retrained or go with the MOS I had...lots of choices. I ended up in a armor brigade 45 min from the house and had a great time. Even though I had to give up two stripes and start off as a Sgt, I attended the necessary schools and ended up retiring as an E7 anyway...I was out 8 years when the War on Terrorism started and returned to the Guard. Did my tour and stayed until I no longer had the time to do another combat tour and retired for good. Now I collect a retirement check equal to 38% of my base pay as an E7. (That's not typical - I had 11 years in the Corps on active duty).

My point is for you to check out all your options...I wanted desperately to serve in the MC Reserves, but that didn't work out. I got use to the change. Not only did I get to finish out my time for retirement, I was able to cross train into different MOSs along the way. I went to Europe several times, and had a great reserve career. Keep you options open and don't be closed minded.
