Word around the lance corporal underground is there are no more 96's. We heard that oki canked them and here at lejeune we were supposed to have one for Colombus day and at the last minute they changed it to a 72...apparently Marines can get DUI's on 96's but not 72's. Anyone heard about this yet, or am I just crazy?

Be glad you are getting a 72. Thats is a priviledge and NOT a right. The Corps doesn't even have to give you weekends off. Just think about your brothers in harms way. They don't get crap and they have earned more than a 72 or a 96 for that matter.

Well they get a month of leave when they get back. I bet if they took away your vaction days you'd get ****ed off...even more so with your WEEKENDS. Todays Marine Corps works in cycles of deployment and garrison, so why not have as much time off when you're not working for 7+ straight months.

Anyway, I haven't heard anything, but I thought it was a 96 too.

So what you are basically saying is every day is a holiday and every meal is a feast.....you just have a shorter time to accomplish the after dinner...nut fest.....

I know this much....I'd be PIZZZED as hell if I got hozed out of a 96, esp. prior to deploying.

96's have been a 'time honored' tradition since at least my day (1982). So to dump it for a stupid reason (that isn't mission essential) is foolish.

And before you dogpile him, I"M the one who told him to post this up. So dogpile ME instead.

Funny, I was just commenting on my buddies FB post about him having 5 days off.

Might be different for MSgt's though....

I'm not in the loop, but when I hear about a Corps wide cank of 96's it makes me wonder -- probably a unit thing.

DCB, they still called it that as late as 2000 when I was there. And there were still those maps, too (had them at MCAS Beaufort as well in the 80's) showing you the liberty limits.

Sgt Leprechaun

Yep...but if you "went and got caught", outside the limits (Like one of my LCpl's did..vehicle breakdown) then you got the high hard one.

The VSP has NEVER been known for their sense of humor! Plenty of my Marines got nailed by them, but the Magistrate system had gone away by the 80's, at least there. It did NOT go away, however, in South Carolina, where the Highway Patrol did do that very thing to those who had out of state licenses. Several Marines I knew got 'hooked and booked' ('Ya'll follow me to the Courthouse now') enroute back to Beaufort from swooping.

I seem to recall the bus still being called that in 1982! It was 'ITS' by then. Of course, it's now "SOI".

That's amazing, still calling it the same thing after all those years. Glad to hear it. Those liberty limits maps were something, too.....only a few people stayed within the limits

We were swooping back in the 90's, too. And we had libo "limit" maps, also. The Corps is big, but it's small, and things change, but they stay the same.

We used to Swoop from MCAS Beaufort, SC to NY/CT 70-71
There were a couple of Marines that used to swoop to Youngstown, Ohio. (that was in a regular week-end)

Columbus Day was my first 72 since Independence Day at MOS school in 2007, and I'm pretty sure it was cut short just because we were students.

I didn't even know the Marine Corps still did 72s, till this weekend. Whatever though, 1 day off is better than none.

yeah we still do the liberty sheets. they are called ORM's. even if I am going from the barracks to my house which is 5 miles away I still have to do it and mapquest it. I understand if I was a boot you could say "what about the Marines on deployment, you should be happy", but since I am not a boot and just got back from deployment than I believe I have the right to complain about it.

I will tell you the Liberty circles do matter still. If you get caught, depending on the command, you will get nailed. The degree of nailed depends on the command. Example... 3 weeks ago my son left Lejuene to come home for the weekend (350) miles. While home he decided to crash a motorcycle and get 10 stitches in his leg and and on crutches for a few weeks and light duty. He did not get in trouble for the accident just being outside the liberty circles. Now he has 60 days of reporting to the OOD at 5:00 pm every day including weekends and lost the 72 over Columbus day. He was told he will get the 96 over Veterans day as long as he keeps his nose clean. Other commands have been known to bust you and take a half months pay for a couple of months.

None. I don't know about the SD to Denver Marine but the swoops I'm talking about happened 40-something years ago.
It was closer to the time of WWII----only 20 years after it ended.

Not that far back-- it was in '99-'01 era....

What if a Marine has a fast Airplane? Does the rules still apply?

It seems like I remember we would get a 96 about once a month at 29 Palms in 1966-68.

There is ALWAYS one Marine that keeps things in perspective.

Semper Fi, Master Gunnery Sergeant.

The premise of my comment is we shouldn't be whining and complaining about it. Certain holidays only warrant a three-day pass, and others a four-day pass. Not all holidays are created equal...

I only got a 72 this weekend, but since Friday was an RDO, it turned out to be a 96.

CalahanD

I wasnt whining about anything. i was just wondering if anybody else had heard about no more 96's. whining would be me saying "Man I hate the corps, we dont get 96's". When I was on deployment I sure didnt care if someone got a 96, your in the rear it doesnt matter. When the people get back from Iraq and Afghanistan than they can get 96's too. It wasnt whining in no way, just a question. I dont mean for this to be rude or talking Back to a Master Guns or anything, I was just saying I wasnt trying to sound like I was whining.

Buttom line is you joined my Marine Corp, My Marine Corp didnt come looking for you. we never got 96s at all when i was in the Corps maybe it was because it depended where you were stationed. but you dang sure didnt get 96s in vietnam or in cuba this i can attest to you on that...

Of course you didn't get 96s in Cuba or Vietnam. He's in Jacksonville, NC USA, not a hostile foreign country. There is no reason for Marines to be given less liberty because other Marines are forward. Being in the rear is supposed to be a time for recharging your batteries, training, and just generally enjoying life, not being miserable here in preparation for being miserable there.

Your logic lacks logic.
