I just got orders to HMX-1 as an Admin Specialist (0111). I have to report in some time between Feb. and Mar. Can anyone tell me about this unit? Personal experiences, things like that. Thanks

HMX-1 is the Marine One white top presidential helo unit I believe (you probably already know this). I doubt any members here are or have been a part of that and even if they were I don't think they would be allowed to speak of what goes on due to security reasons.

My roommate was a crew chief for HMX-1. He says you'll probably work in the adjudant or ops office, tracking flight records, flight times, stuff like that. You'll get a clearance, prob just work 9-5, go to the gym a lot...but not much else, probably won't be going on as many trips as the crew guys do.

There ARE Marines here that served in HMX-1.

Upon return to CONUS from the RVN, Crew Chiefs were invited.

It took a toll on many, just back from the RVN, and having to hit the spit and polish.

Sucked.

There is an MOS that does flight record keeping and updating charts and status and such, 70 something...can't recall.

I wasn't in HMX-1 (nick-named HMX Double-cross) but was in AES-12 across the street at Quantico on the Air Station. back in 1959-1960. Lived in the barracks and witnessed the last person "Drummed Out Of The Corps". They held a formation on the sidewalk in front of the barracks where he was stripped of all his Marine insignia and a pair of drummers marched him all the way out of the gate to Triangle/US-1. We had numerous "dog and pony shows" and parades everytime a PFC came aboard it seemed. Went form Corporal E-3 to Cpl E-4 back to LCPL. Transferred back to the Corps and WestPac. Had enough of that BS. Best liberty next to Miami in the Corps. Also worked in the last "red line" brig at Iwakuni, Japan back in 58.
