MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va.(Sept. 4, 2003) -- Marine combat instructor, military occupational specialty 8513, was created and has been designated as a special duty assignment as stated in All Marine Message 056/02, dated Oct. 10, 2002.

According to ALMAR 056/02, "every Marine, first and foremost, a rifleman; the two Schools of Infantry are in place to give the enlisted Marines a fundamental connection between the Marines and their rifle, and the relationships between Marines that will build trust and reliance on each other."

In the past, boot camp was the primary focus for training Marines. Marine Combat Training at the two SOIs was not a huge focus for all Marines, just infantry Marines. It was just in recent years that female Marines were sent to MCT. The change in focus has created a need for instructors of all ranks-male and female.

Some of the new billets at SOI and the MOS 8513 were designated as SDA because of the crucial needs of having stability within a MOS, which will additionally guarantee qualified instructors to teach combat skills to Marines, said Master Gunnery Sgt. Michael R. McDaniel, Camp Lejeune MCT recruiter liaison. Having the new MOS will allow the instructors to build a bond and be better equipped when training the Marines by being consistent.

"The Marines who volunteer for the Marine Combat Instructor, will get the benefits that a SDA would receive. And for the female Marine, she will obtain one of the few MOSs in the infantry field that a female can hold," added McDaniel.

The marine combat instructor MOS accepts Marines from all job fields within the Corps. Accepting eligible Marines from Corpswide will allow for enhancing combat readiness by providing the operating forces with qualified individuals to conduct combat skills training.

Added benefits of having the 8513 MOS, will be the same as drill instructor, recruiter, Marine security guard, and Marine Corps security forces, which gives those Marines an edge on regular promotion boards, meritorious promotion to the staff sergeant and gunnery sergeant ranks, and the duty station options that Marines compete for.

Once a Marine has the 8513 MOS, he or she will receive a service ribbon and adequate clothing allowance. The duty tour will be a length of 36 months.
