MARINE CORPS AIR STATION IWAKUNI, Japan(Sept. 19, 2003) -- Matthew C. Perry Samurai's home opener against the Yokota Panthers, last year's Rising Sun Bowl Champions, was a grim wake-up call for this year's squad.

The culprits in the loss - too many turnovers resulting in touchdowns, and an overwhelming running game by the Panthers helped the Panthers to a 51-13 win.

The Panthers took an early 7-0 lead off a run by Jeremiah Pearcey. The Panthers' running game continued with Roy Roach running for his first of three touchdowns giving them a 14-0 lead late in the first.

A glimmer of hope came to the Samurai on the last play of the first half when quarterback Ricky Brooks connected with Nathaniel Albia on a 57-yard Hail Mary pass cutting the score in half.

The Panthers came out in the second half determined to stop the Samurai momentum and succeeded on the first play. Running back Jeremiah Pearcey broke through the Samurai line for a 41-yard touchdown run.

The following kick-off was mishandled by Damian Bryan and recovered by the Panthers. The Samurai defensive line held the Panthers for the next two plays bringing up a third and 14 situation from the 26-yard-line. On the next play Roy Roach broke through taking the ball to the end zone.

The Panther defense took to the field allowing the Samurai to make it to the 25-yard-line before Jason Correll picked off a pass by Brooks.

Roach carried the Panthers to the other end of the field finally scoring on a 30-yard run. Before the quarter would end, Chris Roach ran for a 51-yard touchdown pushing the Panthers to a 41-7 lead.

The last quarter of play brought a little more hope to the Samurai squad when Albia recovered a fumble and rumbled into the end zone. The following two-point conversion attempt failed leaving the Samurai with 13 points on the scoreboard. The Panthers added a touchdown and field goal to cement the 51-13 win.

Samurai coach Kevin Crone was optimistic about the way his team played. "The defense played really tough in the first half and we had a hard time with the offense. The big problem was running both ways, we got too tired and we couldn?t keep the momentum. We're going to do a lot of tackling this week. That's what hurt us in the second half."

The home opener was alive with school spirit as the pep band performed and the Parent Teacher Organization along with Samurai fans filled the home team bleachers.

All Samurai home games can be heard on American Forces Network Radio, Power 1575 broadcast.
