SAN DIEGO – A 32-year-old Marine recruit suffered a heart attack during training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego and later died, military officials said today.

Pvt. Alan L. Hernandez of Chicago apparently went into cardiac arrest yesterday while participating in combat condition training, USMC Maj. Joseph Kloppel said.

Hernandez was taken to UCSD Medical Center at 3:15 p.m. yesterday and pronounced dead shortly afterward, Kloppel said.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office will determine the official cause of death, Kloppel said.

This brings back memories of when I was a D.I. I had a recruit die on me. He was 19. I guess they missed his heart ailment in the physical. We were running our usual three miles with the other 3 plt's. One of my D.I.'s (I was a plt. commander) yelled: "Bail?" "STOP!!!" We tried cpr. had a runner go call base hospital. Couldn't get it going. I wrote a letter to his Mom and Dad. Hardest thing I ever did. Sometimes, nobody understands.
