I've been looking into lat moving into possibly 6173/74/76. I was wondering if anyone could give me some info about the job. Like the training schools, where they’re at, how long you're there for, etc... What is the day in the life of air crew like as an NCO? Do you actually get to work the gun? Also, what are the main duty stations for air crew? I appreciate any input you guys can give me. I'm looking to lat move out because I think air crew sounds like the most badass job in the corps besides actually flying the birds. I have my pilot license and this is like the next best thing I can do. Plus, it has a huge bonus incentive.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Well you may or may not go to Pensecola for A school. I heard they are trying to phase it out. But as far as I know, aircrew candidate school is still there. Im not sure for anything but 74's, but the C school is on Pendleton. Google the others. If you become a skid kid you will most likely be west coast ( Pendleton) or east coast ( New River.) You will get to shoot, but you will do more maintenance, daily inspections and testing than anything.

Kinda busy so if you have anything else I'll get back to you on it.

I have no problem with all the behind the scene stuff. I already have experience with the 20mm gatling gun. I've been doing maintenance and repairs on the gun system for a little under a year. How often do you get to go out and practice? How often do you get to go up in the bird? Do you get deployed alot? If you can add anything about the job that would help as well. Again, thanks for the input.

Well you wont be working on the gun, you will only work on the bird. You will fly alot, you have a minimum amount of hours to meet every month to keep your wings. Skids can carry the mini gun, m2, or 240, but no one really runs the 240 anymore. If you want to deploy a lot got east coast, they have less squadrons so theyre gone more. In theater you will do mostly CAS and convoy escorts, besides testing when the bird brakes. Its a technical job, and you will be a little behind everyone else but as long as you have the right attitude and bust your hump you will do fine.

Since you will be lat moving into it. You will probably be shadowing a lcpl at first to learn your new job. Not a big deal just learn all you can.

Hello I'm a A/C on a Huey & Stallion, was Active Duty & Reserves. Most go to Pensacola and you have to pass the NATOPS phys, swim qual, and other test.
Once you get to which type Airframe you will be on, you will get your U.S. Marine Corps Enlisted Aviation Maintenance Personnel Training/Qualification Jacket.
also your Aircrew Pocket Book / NATOPS Manual. You will have to have a Flight Chit from medical. Then you learn the bird you will be working on. Then you will go to Airial Gunners School and learn the weapons. They might now combine all into one school instead of broken up. There is alot to learn and remember and have to swim with Full Flight Gear.

This thread may be 10 pages long, but it has a lot of valuble information about the job (most of which I contributed to)

As a lat move, you will have to go through all the same training as the new Marines do. By the way, the $35,000 Huey and $44,000 Osprey bonuses sound mighty good. I have to wait for 01DEC for my lat move paperwork to go through (same for you, I'd imagine). Let's hope there are some boat spaces left!
