Journal Staff Writer Marine Cpl. Paul Fagundes, a Fall River native, died July 4 while trying to save two fellow Marines who were swimming at a beach off Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where they were stationed.
According to a Marine Corps news release and an obituary in The (Fall River) Herald News, Fagundes, 29, died while trying to rescue fellow Marines Giovani Cruz and James May Jr. in waters off Cable Beach, near the naval station. All three drowned in the incident.
The three men were assigned to the Fleet Anti-Terrorism Security Team Alpha Company, 6th Platoon out of Norfolk, Va.
Marine FAST companies spend three months at NAVSTA Guantanamo Bay guarding the fence line that separates U.S. sovereign territory from Cuba and participate in antiterrorism training.
A memorial service was held July 7 for the three men at the base chapel at Naval Station Guantanamo Bay. Fagundes’ body was to be flown back to Logan Airport Sunday afternoon.
A funeral is planned for Tuesday, with full military honors, from the Manuel Rogers & Sons Funeral Home, 1521 N. Main St., Fall River, at 8:45 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Anne’s Church, South Main Street, at 10 a.m. Burial will be at Notre Dame Cemetery.
Fagundes was a 1999 graduate of Joseph Case High School in Swansea and Bristol Community College.
He is survived by his wife, Cynthia Marie (Amaral) Fagundes, formerly of Fall River and most recently of Norfolk, Va.; their son, Cazzian Paul Fagundes; his parents, Jorge and Rosemary (Furtado) Fagundes; and a sister, Belinda Fagundes, all of Fall River. His wife is expecting a daughter whom they have named Anya Paulynn Fagundes.
