Dang. Got out. just a month or so after the first wife left, threw everything in the dumpster, and put the rest on my Harley, and hit the road fer a year. Memory'll have to do. Y'all heard it before, but here goes. Boot, Platoon 1083, last of July to October something 1976. Millington from October 76 to April 77. Mos school( Can't remember what it was called) April to dang'ed if I remember of 77.Sometime in July or early August, I think. HMT-301 from then to when I went to HMH-361 all @ Tustin. Did a few trips to boats and Pendleton and such. Nothing much. Did the K-Bay thing 79-80 with HMH-265. Then to HMT-301 til I got out in 83. Not a very distinguished career, but a Marine career nonetheless. (Yeah, yeah, yeah, I did the dead people thing..." I think I got John's leg over here" " No, I got it over here" " *******. Why didn't he have his dogtag in his bootlace like he was supposed to." " Let 'em sort it out back at the base, then. Put it over here with the other parts." Thinking to myself, I don't want to remember this. I don't want to remember this.)) Until a few weeks ago, I didn't. Part of the reason I've been such an ass here and there lately. Sorry, folks.

Approaching 73 yers of age don't know if the old brain housing still contains that type of info, but will try. Here goes:

MCRD SDIEGO; MOS School MCAS El Toro; Hedron 1stMAW ElToro; USNH LongBeach;1stMAW;MCS Quantico; lstSgt/AdminCrs PI SC; LogChief, G-4 1stMAW ( K-3 Korea);MWSS-1 Itami Japan; Hq 1stProvMarBrig, Camp Fisher Japan; MB NAD Hawthorne NV; USNH Oakland; MB TI SFRAN; NCOinC, MarLiaison USNH Oakknoll; 3rdAmTracBn CampDelMar;DI School SDiego;3rdRTB SDIEGO; HqBn MCRD SDIEGO; I-I CoB 3rdEngBn Eugene OR; 2ndBn 4thMar (Vietnam 66-67); MWTC Bridgeport;HQ 1stMCD Garden City NY;Transferred to FMCR 3lJul70.

My career was far from traditional. A lot of posts and stations, base closings, redesignations, and etc. However, I was honored to meet and serve with a lot of great Marines and their families. I only hope that my service served in the best interests of the USMC and our great country. We all had jobs to do and each one was important and hoipefully brought out the best in us.

Really enjoy this retirement life! Still volunteer at the Military Retired Activities Office here in Eugene primarily issuing ID cards for all branches, dependents, 100% DAV and etc. In Oregon we have no large military bases so our service area is quite large. Some come over 100 miles to get ID cards renewed.

Last series to graduate in 1985. 1st Battalion, B Company, Platoon 1106. Dec 20th, Winter Greens (wool) and it was 90 degrees on the Grinder. To let some of the younger Marines know how small the Corps is, SgtMaj J.J. Johnson retired on that day (made for a very long ceremony with several dropping out) and when it was over my father informed me that he had been senior to the SgtMaj when they were both on Okinawa in 1954/55... my dad was a Cpl.

Yep, sounds like we ate someof the same dirt. Went down to Getmo on the Nassau (LHA4), during her shakedown they said. I think I remember the A/C going haywire, and they handed out more blankets in the troop compartments (oh, the hardships we endured) lol

3/6 got their first NMUC for that trip, did 2/6 get one also???
I had a buddy that I think was in weapons 2/6, Griffith was an 0351 (106 recoiless in those days). Ring any bells??

I had a piece of land one minute from the entrance to the park.

My kids grew up on week-ends at the stream.

Sold the land years ago and the kids have grown up of course.

It still draws me. Was there last may.

Good retirement plan!

Greybeard,

With HMH-462 we had the UHS-2.

I'm not familar with the new call-out of the birds.

It had two 9 cyl radial engines that sat on the sides. The front opened up to receive troops or cargo.

I think that everything I flew in is in a museum. But that does'nt mean I'm getting old, does it? LOL

What did you have in HMH-463?

Would that SSGT Vines be of the big, scary, deep voiced, flat top wearing, Dark Green Variety who now serves as the command Sgt. Major of 3/5? He was my platoon sg. in 85 whilst serving in 2/5 I always knew he would go far.

Yes we are on the same page with the SSGT Vines that has the voice that you could hear from across the parade deck.I heard that after our series he went on to be the top Drill Seargent of all the series, after that I lost contact. I have to say if it wasnt for him I wouldnt have made it as far as I did. I would like to say thanks to him if there is any way to contact him.

I feel like an antique. Life for the Woman Marine of today is a world away from the days when we were required to serve tea at the CO's mansion at PI prior to graduation. Yes, we slogged with packs and cammies, and trained with our M16's, but we were taught our sole obligation in the Corps was "To Free a Man to Fight". Our social security # were proceeeded by a 'W' so that no one would mistake us for the male Marines. (even on the dog tags we wore on our less-than-masculine chests) We slept in segregated barracks that had a chaparoned visiting area where we could entertain our guests and we were not allowed in the club without a male escort. I reached the rank of Sgt, drilled my men, and put up with sexual harrassment before I even knew there was a term for such a thing. I enjoyed the Marine Corps, fulfilled my 6 yr enlistment. One of my finest memories is of a fellow Marine, who joined the LosAngeles Police Dept, coming back to the Unit for a visit and wanting to take my picture so he could show the other cadet officers 'what a REAL Marine looks like'.

Here's my tour, such as it is:
PISC Oct '81-Jan '82 ('celebrated' my 18th birthday with IPT)
ScholsBn, Camp Pen '82
Btry B, 1/14 Pico Rivera CA (heavy arty) '82- '83
Co B, 6thEngrSptBn,(combat engineers) South Bend, IN '83-'86
Comm Co, Ft Wayne, IN '86-'87

TAD at the following:
'82 Camp Lejuene
'83 Camp Pen
'84 Camp Rilea, OR (army base)
'85 Camp Rilea, OR
'86 Ft Carson, CO (army) for combined forces live-fire exercise. CSSD 43

Dvan... THANKS FOR AN OUTSTANDING JOB !!!!
I finally figured out why there are WOMAN MARINES...
Main purpose is to read and write our letters home to Ma...
Most of us still have a hard time writting with these crayola crayons...LOL...
The only time I seen a WM get mad was one time in downtown J'ville,
some dumb ass drunk Marine was getting to free with his hands,
she asked him to knock it the (F***) off...he didn't...next thing we knew he was out cold in the middle of the street...Everyone applauded
With out you and the WM Corps..I firmily beleive that nothing would
have showed up where it was supposed to...

I Guess I should fill in a few blanks here, I havent seen this one before today.......
March 15, 1969 Joined up and was on my way to Paris Island, was in Plt 141
Next stop was Camp Geiger for Infantry training,
Next went to Nas Millington for Aviation School, Ground Support Equipment, Hydraulics
Next was MCAS Beaufort, Mag 32, H&MS-32 GSE, what the chances of getting back to Beaufort???
Sept 1970 received orders to Mag-11 Da-Nang RVN, went to Oki, then was sent TAD to Phillipines for (JEST) Jungle essential survival Training, Finished 3 weeks of that went back to Oki.
Then I was told I would not be going to Da Nang, I was going to Mag 12 Iwakuni Japan, Woo-Hoo!!
Arived in Iwakuni was in Mag-12, H&MS-12 GSE, in FEB of 1971 was sent TAD to VMA 211 to Cubi Point Phillipines for 3 months, loaded A-4's with ordnance, they flew around the clock it seened for the entire 3 months, they flew to VN, droped ordnance and flew back, did plane check outs, new tires, re fuel, re load and another pilot would take off again. Finally we were all sent back to Iwakuni, I was glad to be back home with my fellow Marines, But this did't last long, May 16th 1971 I was ordered TAD again to
VMA-211, this time we went to Bien Hoa RSVN, what a mess, any body ever been there can tell you a few boring stories, same thing again, load ordnance, seemed like for ever, but in June I was replaced and sent Back to Iwakuni. VMA-211, and VMA-311 from MAG-12 stayed there.
Left Iwakuni in Sept 71, went Back to Millington Tenn, this time as an Instructor.
Left Millington and went to Mag-26, H&MS-26 GSE, was there in 72, left and went to MARTD Atlanta when I re-enlisted and got choice of duty station, bad choice, didnt really like the duty there much. In 1975 I was sent back to New River, Mag-29, H&MS-29 GSE, felt like home again, In april 1976 I was sent Back to Iwakuni Japan, this time with MWHS-1 GSE as NCOIC of GSE.
I was TAD to a lot of different Base's for Schools, NAS Norfolk, NAS, Jacksonville Fla, Panama City Fla, Quantico Va., think thats all, anyway in July 1976 I was ordered home on emergency leave, didnt want to go but SGT MAJ made me, it was after the war was over and anybody that was in back then can tell you the Military was starting to suck very hard back then.......... for any reason they could think of you were out, for example they told me, before I could re-enlist again, which wouldnt be until 1979, that I had to have a High school diploma, I said I didnt have squat when I came in here and I have a GED now, but that wasnt good enough. Anyway when i got home my wife was sick in the hospital, she had cancer, and we had 2 small children, I requested a Humanitarian transfer back anywhere in the united states and was told to either be back in Iwakuni or I could request a discharge. this was my answer on the day they did a complete Historectomy on my then 24 year old wife so I decided she and the children needed me more than the SUCK. I ended up divorcing her a few years later, I wish I knew back in 76 before I got out what I knew about her after I came home from over seas.......but thats another story LMAO
Any way now I have made my post and maybe you know a little more about me.

Good luck on your search Chris! More info on your dad may help. The time he joined and all the units he was with may help find someone he served with.

Actually, if you get a chance, pick up the book Making the Corps by Thomas Ricks. He followed our series around, different platoon though. pretty cool book nonetheless.

Walter.
I don't think any of the old wood barracks are left on PI.
I know 1st Battalion barracks are now modern brick buildings.
Complete with running water, flush toilets, electricity and heat (LOL).

Platoon 167
1st Battalion.
Company C.
Aug - Oct 1965.

By the way, any of you Marines out there remember the rumors at Camp Gieger that Recon Marines would walk the elevated pipes there and jump down off them to scare hell out of us trainees ??

2nd IT Battalion.
1st ITR.
MCB CLNC.
Oct - Nov 1965.

Walter

Ed, 1st & 3rd Battalions had brick barracks then, but 2nd Battalion was the only ones with wood barracks at the time.

I remember those rumers about the Recons jumping off the pipes at Gieger. We never saw any of them.

It looks as though you and I just missed each other at Gieger. I arrived there in January 66. Was at PI Sept, Oct, Nov then home to Charlotte on leave and to Gieger. The old memory is letting me down these days.

You were probably at PI when we had the trouble with the a**holes that had our DI's relieved of duty. 2nd Battalion.

Walter.
I went through boot camp Aug - Oct 65.
1st Battalion. I was in wood barracks.
The only other area I remember with any certainty is the rifle range which sported brick barracks.
You & I were on the Island together.
I graduated in Oct 65.

Walter
12-01-04, 08:23 PM
Ed, I graduated Nov 65. We WERE on the Island together.....The rifle range did have the great barracks...we had to force march over there after snapping in for a week, to qualify with the M-14 and then using the M-1 at Gieger during ITR, what a difference in weapons at the time.

I went from Gieger to LeJeune, HQ Battalion, 10th Marines....assigned to assist Gunny J. Johnson in food requisition for a minute, played music, join the HQ Battalion Football team, but shipped out before the first game.
Went on 3 Carribean Cruises, to Gitmo, Viegas, Panama, etc...
Did not have to deploy to Nam...

Out Sept 68......
