I never run into any Women Marines, just the male Marines. I guess I'm going to have to join a USMC organization. I haven't been to any of the USMC Birthday Balls for years. I know about the WM Assn. Semper Fi Sheila Hays

My dad started at Pendleton, became a Platoon Sgt, then served 3 yrs in Da Nang. I believe it was 1st Marine Division at Pendleton but Im not 100% sure..?

He used to show me b/w pictures from his boot camp days.

The walls of his house used to be covered in his Pendleton USMC Marksman trophies and medals. Not sure what he did with them.

I'm proud to be the son of a Marine.:usmc:
My nephew Gabriel can't stop talking about his grandpa. He wears a Semper-Fi t-shirt to school almost every day.

Dad doesn't talk about the Corp very often anymore. Used to tell me and my brother stories about being a rat and a door gunner, when we were kids. He told us door-gunners could make an extra $27 a month..? So much for hazard pay!

The Corp was good to him, and I think he hated having to get out early when my mom got ill back in the states.

The ideals the my dad taught me and my brother clearly came from the Corp; discipline, honor, strength, and head-first bravery.

I honor my dad, Pt. Sgt. Bernardino Laroya.:usmc:

Semper Fi My fellow Devil Dogs. Does anyone remember the serial number of their first M-16 issue or M-14 issue?
I do not remember the serial #'s of the weapons I was issued but I do remember having the butt of a M16A1 shoved out a little hole in a concrete wall into my gut at P.I. in Feb. '86 when we Pvt's in Plt 3039 were first issued rifles. About a week later we were marched back to swap those A1's for A2's. The A1's rattled like maracas but the A2's were brand spankin' new and a real ***** to field strip.

I was with Ammunition Company 2nd FSSG from approx September 77 to November 78 when I EASed. Had a couple of TADs stuffed in there. Spent 3 months as a Brig Chaser for JAG, 3 months as 2nd FSSG Deserter Clerk, and 3 months as NCOIC for the Ammunition Depot. We were neighbors. SF

Howdy former neighbor. :iwo:

I joned the Corps in April of '63 on the 120 day delayed enlistment program. I entered Boot Camp in July of '63. At MCRD San Diego. And ITR waas at CAmp Pendleton Ca. I got 20 days leave and then I was ordered to VMGR-352 El Toro Santa Ana Ca. I was duty driver for the Squadron, worked in the office as file clerk, was postal clerk, honor guard, wheels watch with crash crew, I fought brush fires in L. A. I volenteered for 1st Marine Brigade Hawaii. I left San Diego on the U.S.S. Breckenridge in April of 1965, arrived in Hawaii three days later. My unit shipped out to Okinawa and I followed them for 27 days on the ship, we arrived in Okinawa spent 5 days there then I flew to Da Nang aboard a C-130 arrived May of 1965, flew by H-34 helicopter to Chu Lai and joined C Company 3rd Motor Transport Battalion. drove duce an a half for about 5 month straight hauling bombs off the causeway to the ammo dump, and also to troops in the field hauling ammo and C-rations. Then in January of '66 we transferred up to Da Nang and joined the Battalion. I was bored so I volenteered for convoys to Phu Bai. And on those convoys I met enemy action firing my .50 caliber machine atop my duce an a half, I wast told I am a hero for staying with the gun. I was offered a bronze star, but told em I was just doing what I was told to do. I got wounded and never received my purple heart.

After that I left in May of '66 got 20 days leave and ended up at Transport Company 8th Motor Transport Battalion Camp Lejeune N.C. I was duty driver there and volenteered to go to school and learn the Marine Corps personnel manual and become Cheif Administration Clerk for the Company. I was honorably discharged in June of 1967. I got busted one rank for disorderly conduct but gained my rank back passing the IG inspection. I would of made E-5 had I not gotten busted. Oh Well......

No problem, we all get that way after awhile. I also noticed the HST. Shore Party?

Yep, I think Shore Party started in WWII, the guys who set up the zones on the beaches where the mike boats would go, I think they unloaded the boats and sent the stuff out to the front lines. We wore red patches on our helmet and pants. In Nam there were almost no boats or trucks, resupplying the grunts and getting the medevacs out, it was helicopters so they started the helicopter support teams (HST) 1 to 4 man teams, 1 radio operator who would contact the choppers and talk them into the zone(me) and 3 signal men, the guys who would stand out on the LZ and wave the choppers in when they had good visual contact or at night would wave flashlights with long red things on the end.

We were assigned to grunt units of just about any size, mostly battallon and company but I've been out with platoons. We usually stayed as long as they were in the field but we also went to fixed positions like Con Thien, Ka Sahn and the Rockpile. We used all the same procedures as the FAC Teams so we also filled in for them if anything bad happened and visa versa. It was a good job, hump the days, set up an LZ, land a few choppers, get first grabs on the chow, we knew all of the air crews, they would bring us out sandwiched and cold beer once in a while to keep us from landing them in a tree some dark night. IT was good until we got into the Sh*t, then it wasn't so good you had to talk choppers down and carry medevacs out to them while people shot at everybody involved, but all in all I came home feeling good about my time, feeling that I saved a lot of guys. Anyway thats Shore Party. I doubt that it even exists any more.

Sorry for the confusion, had a few not that long ago before I wrote it. Usually I don't get into e-mail to much but the video on youtube got to me,"mcas el toro 2005-present and final look". Back then they called us "hollywood marines". But many of our best memories were there. LA was just ten minutes up I-5,Laguna beach the other way,Big bear mountain the other. Alot of guys would be out to the clubs. Great people out there. No matter how you sliced it,El toro was a special place and we we're lucky to be there. I remember when I got my orders while I was on Okinawa. Everyone thought it was a lucky break. Guess when your a radio operator you could get put anywhere, thats what I was at the time. Thanks for the reply. How was Germany.Have a very good friend who is a Vietnam vet friend who was stationed there in the 60's. About to grab my 3rd beer. Thanks.Semper Fi.

After going through basic at MCRD San Diego, I went through ITS up in Camp Pendleton. Got shipped across the country to Camp LeJeune and joined Fox 2/4 where I spent just under 3 years.
I did a 6 month Okinawa deployment and participated in "Team Spirit '87".
Went to the Med on the USS Guam after that in '88. We were part of the USS Kennedy Carrier group that engaged those Mig 23's from Libya. On the USS Guam, we were all set to launch in our CH-46's and 53's. We sat in those ready rooms for HOURS!!! Nothing ever came of that other than those MIG's getting splashed as far as we were concerned.
After we got back from the Med in '88 I was detached to the USS. Boulder to do the "Great Lakes Cruise '89". Being that I am from Detroit that was a nice reprieve and a very good time even though it was a glorified "dog and pony show"
As soon as I got back from that I was sent to India 3/6 and soon thereafter found myself on a plane to Panama where I took part in "Operation Just Cause".

IT'S "BOOTCAMP" DEVIL DOG, NOT "BASIC", WE'RE IN THE MARINE CORPS, NOT THE ARMY/AIR FORCE. :flag:

Apr 82? - June 82 Okay this is where it gets tricky, I was transferred out of the 10th and into a start-up NBC Co. to be the supply guy and because I had some monitor survey training in Okinawa but the man in charge decided he knew more about what was going on with my side of the coin and besides, I only had a month to go before my EAS what the heck, stick it out, I've seen worse.......riiiiight! Swear to god I applied for a supply gig on a float heading out in a month just to get away from that madhouse. It was a good deal. So my last official duty was with a UNITAS float to the Carib, South America and Africa from July 82 - Dec 82.
When we got back stateside, I took leave to get some time off the books and came back to actually re-enlist but everything was at a standstill those days, No Bonuses, Duty Stations, Rank, Change of MOS, Nothing, plus the fact that I had no Idea where I was actually even attached to. Turns out it was with 2dBn Hq Supply. Heavy Sigh....No thanks, I'm out and that's what sucks (can I say that?)

I shot with you on Dog line, You fired expert, I fired Sharpshooter. I remember Pvt. Young had a bladder problem. 10 mile force march took out lots of dudes. 1/3 of our series. It was a black flag day, we lost hearst and toward the end had a heat stroke victim. (forgot his name, you remember, though.) Gunny was ****ed we didn't finish the march so we got thrashed. We started with 62 personnel, graduated 38. We were so jacked up from the start, but were all real good shooter's. I remember Moulton's girlfriend sent him a bag of weed and Lawson walked around with it. We :usmc:thought he was screwed. People talk about the Crucible now and I laugh because every minute for that platoon was the crucible. I went there weighing 165, left at 145. You lost a human's worth of weight too. Semper Fi Bro.

Camp Lejuene 1944

Pavuvu, Russell Island Chain, May through August 1944, K Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division. That was the 3rd platoon, 3rd Squad, 3rd Fire Team. I was our BAR man for our Fire Team.

You gotta think, I was a lucky son of a gun, because if it wasn't for my assignment to the Brooklyn Naval Yard, and then back to Camp Lejuene (I could never figure that one out), I would have made Cape Gloucester for sure.

I'm not quite sure what you mean. As far as I know this thread doesn't have a photo section. I've posted photos on my group (airwing) and also there is the photo gallery (haven't posted there yet) but it works best for me to scan pictures onto a jump drive and then load from there.( so I don't have to dig through my computer folders or files)

There is a Bootcamp Database for both SD and PI there!

Welcome aboard Seachaser, and cpl whitman. You have found the best Marine site on the WWW. If you happen to run into another brother in the store, VFW, VA or wherever, be sure to ask them if they have a computer and if they know about LN. Word of mouth has brought many a Marine onto the site. SF

Welcome Aboard, cpl whitman, seachaser1950, and ejamtny,

but, cpl whitman, please, please do not ever apologize, or act like you are apologizing for graduating as a "Hollywood Marine".
Those PI Marines need their own "special" thread, 23 pages long, and over 300 submissions, trying to justify "thinking" they are the best.

I think the water at Parris Island has radiation or some weird chemicals in it.

Again, good to have you in the house.
