Suck is a kind word when your deployed on a LST. I was on the USS Monticello for a cruise in 1982, I forget the hull number but it was a late 1940's LST. The plumbing was always messed up. The worst however was heavy weather and the flat bottom.

The third Monticello (LSD-35) was laid down 6 June 1955

From Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships, Vol. IV (1969), pp. 430

Monticello

Home of President Thomas Jefferson near Charlottesville Va., noted as a landmark in American domestic architecture, and designed by Jefferson himself.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(LSD-35: dp. 12,510; l. 510'; b. 84'; dr. 18'6"; s. 23 k.; cpl. 304: a. 8 3"; cl. Thomaston)

The third Monticello (LSD-35) was laid down 6 June 1955 by Ingalls Shipbuilding Corp., Pascagoula, Miss.; launched 10 August 1956; sponsored by Mrs. Harry R. Sheppard, wife of Congressman Sheppard of California; and commissioned 29 March 1957, Capt. J. T. Hodgson, Jr., in command.

After outfitting and trials off the East Coast, Monticello arrived at her homeport, San Diego, 27 May 1957 to join Amphibious Forces, Pacific Fleet, and immediately began shakedown training. She continued to operate off the Pacific coast, joining in major amphibious training operations which took her to Eniwetok in 1958 and Hawaii and Alaska in 1959, serving usually as primary control ship. Such operations, involving ships of all types along with underwater demolition teams and Marines, keep the fleet at top readiness for any challenge of diplomatic crisis or war itself.

On 14 November 1960 Monticello sailed for a 7-month deployment with the 7th Fleet in the western Pacifie. She was combat-loaded with part of a Marine renforced battalion landing team, and was alerted four times during the Laos crisis, steaming with Paul Revere (APA-248) and four escorting destroyers in the South China Sea and the Gulf of Siam. Returning to San Diego in July, Monticello joined in a joint Army-Navy-Air Force amphibious exercise at San Juan Island, Wash., in September, then returned to fleet training operations from her homeport.

Monticello sailed 18 February 1962 in JTF 8 for nuclear weapons tests at Christmas Island, first carrying cargo between Christmas Island and San Diego, and then acting as command ship during tests of antisubmarine weapons. In June, she sailed again to Christmas Island to aid in closing down the test operation, and continued to a second 7th Fleet tour of duty highlighted by a large amphibious exercise at Okinawa. She returned to San Diego and a program of training with Camp Pendleton marines, necessary overhaul, and refresher training early in Deeember.

She again joined the 7th Fleet's Amphibious Ready Group from January to October 1964, taking part in SEATO as well as U.S. exercises.

After operating on the Atlantic coast through much of 1965, Monticello headed back to the western Pacific in August. Early in 1966, she steamed to South Vietnam for operation "Double Eagle," the longest and largest amphibious operation of the Vietnam conflict up to that time. It enabled Allied forces to engage Vietcong near Thac Tru and secure a beachhead in a key area. At the operation's conclusion, 26 February, she headed for Subic Bay en route home via Hong Kong, Yokosuka, and Pearl Harbor.

After overhaul at San Pedro and training along the Pacific coast, Monticello got underway from San Diego 13 January 1967, heading for the Far East. Much action awaited her in Vietnam. She served as primary command ship for "Beacon Hill I" at Quang Tri 20 March to 2 April and "Beacon Star" there 22 April to 12 May. She joined in operation "Bell" in the latter half of May, in "Beacon Torch" and "Bear Chain" in July, and in August participated in "Kangaroo Kick," an amphibious feint off Hue, and "Belt Drive," again at Quang Tri. Relieved at Danang in September. Monticello returned to San Diego 13 October. After an overhaul that lasted until early 1968, Monticello conducted refresher training and local operations out of San Diego. In November of that year, she once again deployed to Vietnam where she remains into 1969.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[NOTE: Monticello was decommissoned 1 Oct 1985 and transferred to the Maritime Administration on 2 Aug 1991. Her name was struck from the Navy list 24 February 1992 and she was sold 29 Sept. 1995.]

Posting this in memorie of my Dad who passed away. I have an old photo on my wall taken at Camp Pendleton. The picture is 31 inches long and 8 1/2 inches tall and features my Dad's Inf Tr Reg. One special feature of the picture is that the same man appears on both ends of the picture. As my Dad tells the story, the camera was a panoramic style and as soon as the guy was out of frame he sprinted around the back to stand at the other end. In the picture you can see the whole top row laughing, and smiling because they saw him run by.

If anyone has a similar picture I would love to hear about it. Maybe I could even find some of the people in the picture.

We weren't even allowed to bring our families....weren't eligible for promotion. Lol....my Capt tried to make me return to base during my Christmas leave to take a PFT. Since I wasn't eligible for promotion, you can guess what I told him (got a 0).

Apart from my last 6 month stint.....I loved almost every minute of it. Was a few signatures away from re-enlistment, but then they told me I couldn't do Embassy duty until I did another WestPac....been with the 1stCivDiv ever since. Funny....a month after I got out...Gen. Krulak issued an order stating any E-4 and above wanting Embassy duty would be allowed.

My oldest son joined the Navy, he's out after ten years. I have two other sons they are civilians. They went thru college, I so wanted one to be a Marine since his dad and I were both in the Corps. Congratulations to your family. Semper Fi. LadyM59 Sheila Hays

Hi,
I got through "Four in the Corps" yesterday. Somethings have changed, some not. You guys got more hand to hand than we did. We did'nt have any after boot!! I did'nt get, what a "helo company" was. Was each company in the bn assigned a mode of transport(other than feet)? What is the combat swimmer course?
But, you still had field days. What a waste of time. Did'nt you have one hour of cod every morning? I could'nt stand that.

Couldn't help but comment on when you were in Boot. My platton was in our final phase just 1 week away from graduation when you got there. I remember we were at a final class and a platoon of obvious new boots came hip hoppity down the street. I and another of my platoon mates were guarding our rifles out side the classroom. The Drill Instructoer stopped the platoon right across the street and proceeded to chew so,e a**. We started laughing and the Drill instructer looked over his shoulder and saw us. He turned to the his platoon and said. Look at those two over there, they are about to graduate as Marines. You maggots on the other hand stand little chance of making it in My Marine Corps. You have a long hard road ahead, and I will make you wish you were not born. I looked at my fellow Boot and our eyes met and I know we were thinking the same thing. Which is "God I was that messed up when I got here". Semper Fi I wander if it was your platoon.

..it was long time ago..lost lot of bro's to enemy rocket/mortar attacks and down choppers.. very sad time.

I fired the old M1-garand at yearly qualification at EL Toro rifle range while at
Seal Beach in 1967..an old salt from the Korean war was our NCO in charge. He showed me everything about this weapon. He even tried to swap his M-14 with me to qualify. I fired 231 out of a possible 250. Glad I didn't.
My C.O. at Seal Beach presented me with a trophy (which was stolen from me) and a commendation. Anyway I still have my personal history file to show my score. I was asked from one of gunny's at the El Toro rifle range if I was interested in becoming a marine rifle sniper. Maybe I should of tried out for it, but at the time my focus was to stay as an mp.

Semper Fi Marine. The Marines of your era exemplified courage, commitment, and a never say die attitude that is lost on most of the nation today. If not for your sacrifices, and those of your comrades in arms, we could very easily be speaking Japanese, or German as a first language. You did it all with a whole lot less than our Marines have today to work with. All my fellow Marines and this country owe you a debt we cannot ever hope to repay, but I will spend my life trying to. :iwo:

July 1982 - October 1982: MCRD San Diego. Platoon 2066 Senior DI SSGT Cabot, and SSGT Petrovich. :flag:

October 1982 - April 1983: MATSG-90 NATTC Millington, TN. Basic Electricity and Electronics plus other classes. When I got my orders, I saw my final Duty Station was Yuma, AZ.... I grew up in Phoenix so it wasn't really a chance to see the world ;) .

May 1983 - September 1983: NCAS Oceana (Virginia Beach). Best duty EVER. When I got there, they had no more 4 bunk shared rooms so they gave me a 'temporary' room for staff NCO's (I was a lowly E1). It was a one bed 'hotel' room with a TV and cleaning service! I spent the whole 4 months assigned to that room. I guess they never remembered to move me. I was going for advanced avionics training on EA6-B's, but the classes were short and had weeks between them. With civilian run KP, all we had to do was check in every morning and then hit the beaches all day. It was a summer long spring break. Hung out a lot with a guy named Stonebreaker. He said boot was hell for him because his senior DI was named Stone.

September 1983 - October 1984: MCAS Yuma. I can't remember the squadron but I worked Intermediate level avionics in a big building about 2 miles from the hangar, across from the motor pool yard. It was an A4 squadron, which made me wonder why I spent time learning to fix FLIR units (the upside down R2D2 looking things underneath an EA6-B ). I spent some time in the MIARS shop. Kudos to anyone that can remember the MIARS. I wasn't very happy there because I wanted to see the world. One good thing did come out of it. I met my wife while on my usual weekend trip to Phoenix. We met in July of 84 and then I got orders to go to Andrews AFB. We were engaged 6 weeks after meeting and got married 6 weeks after getting engaged. 2 days after getting married, we packed up a U-Haul and moved to DC. We are still married 23 years later.

October 1984 - July 1986: VMFA 321 Andrews AFB, Maryland. I worked Intermediate Avionics support. We were seperate from the squadron and worked in these God-awful tiny portable trailers. The 'O' level guys would take the electronic gear out of the plane then send it to us to fix. It was great work. I met a lot of great people in this shop and my wife and I made a lot of friends. This was the tail end for the F-4's. We were sent to Top Gun in Miramar to be the 'enemy' planes students in F18's could shoot at, as well as Cold Lake Canada. The Canadians already had the F-18 and we were the target practice.

I was sad to read that the squadron is now disbanded. I've been trying to reach some of the old gang, but haven't had much luck. I read some postings from PhantomPhixer and JetDoc, but they were 'O' level guys and like I said we were seperate from the squadron guys except on rare occassion.

Anyway, I would love to hear from anyone I 'crossed paths' with. Semper Fi and God Bless.

It was awesome. The best time a young man can have in his 'formative' years. Every Marine I talk to never really had a 'bad' time with any part of it. Every aspect was a learning cycle, and all of memorable.

I loved it and absolutely hated it. For the most part i think any 03 has a love/hate relationship with the Marines. I didn't particularly like getting shot at or almost blown up, or lugging around 80lbs for 25 miles. But I loved the drinking, the Marines around me, and the tradition. Going threw all of the above stuff with other Marines made us friends forever. I think that is the best thing i got out of the Marines. Brothers.

PI boot 7/77

In Aug. or Sept. of 79 I was transferred to India 3/6 and given passage onboard the Nassua bound for Cuba. Reinforced the barracks and rebuilt the defenses. I don't think they had been mantained since my father had built them in the late fifties. While there heard about the fire at Camp Figi, the embassy in Iran being taken, and the rumors of involuntary extensions (some things never change). The force suffered one fatality that I'm aware of. On the night of Nov. 10th they relaxed the minimum beer rations and one Marine got drunk, went to the beach alone, and passed out on his back.

One of the seastories that came out of that exercise was that a track had landed on a beach on the wrong side of the fence and was met by 3 Russian tanks. I don't know how that could've happened, but the air was charged when we went in so imaginations must've been at work. 20% casualty rate before we get ammo, says the captain. Sheesh.

Bootcamp....At P.I.........1974.......Then Memphis...and then on to Newriver HMT204 in 1974-1975.....1975-1978 was with Soms at Kaneohe Bay.....Like a D.S. i got out in 1978.....SEMPER FI ALL
Know what it's like to be a D.S. LOL. I was in from Nov 1974 to Nov 1978. Boot was MCRD San Diego, then Ammunition Tech training at Redstone Arsennal Huntsville Ala, then off to #rd MarDiv Mike 3/12 Camp Hauge Okinawa (June 1975-July 1975, then TAD to Ammunition Company, Camp Henoko, Okinawa (North edge of Camp Schwab) July 1975-July 1976 then to Camp Lejuene where I was attached to Ammunition Company till my discharge. Did TAD as a Deserter clerk at Camp Lejeune Force Troops, TAD as NCOIC at Camp Lejeune Ammunition Depot, and 6 months TAD as a Prisoner Escort (Chaser) for JAG at camp Lejeune. I got out because my wife then said if I re-inlisted she was going home without me. Heck we didn't last but 3 more years together after my discharge. By then I was getting soft, and didn't think I could pass a physical to re-up. So, Here I am an old worn out truck driver who lives the motto: "The older we get, the better we were".

I know when I say this, I speak for all the young re-enlistee's, We're proud to keep the dedication of God, Corps, Country, and Family. I added the last part, because without my family, I couldn't endure some of the hardships that come with the job. We want to keep the traditions going and keep America and Americans safe. I'll keep re-enlisting until they tell me I cannot anymore.

1988 Assigned to India 3/6
1988-1989 Okinawa, Pohang and Pusahn, ROK, NTA, Camp Fuji in December. Sailed on USS Ogden.
1989 Curacao (Trained with Dutch Marines)
1989 Ft. Sherman, Panama. (Humped from Ft. Sherman to Howard AFB).
1989 Panama - Reassigned to Kilo 3/6 due to shortages in there Company - trained as an 0331 - Dec. 19th Op. Just Cause (1st CAR), later became 0351 SMAW Gunner.
1990 Honduras, 1 day stop over at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. (Working party) (Sailed on USS Harland County)
1990 TAD - USARIEM, Natick, MA. Human guinea pig for new type of MRE's. Severe humping, 7 straight days of 12-20 mile humps, with measured gear weighing exactly 100 lbs over your body weight. Was the only one to complete all 28 days of the trial. (Last day of each of the 4 weeks, was done on a tread mill, with blood drawn after each hour. 4 hours each day).
1990 December - Saudi Arabia - Desert Shield
1991 Kuwait - Desert Storm
1991 Bridgeport, CA - Summer Package. Fantastic training. 9494! Pickle Bunker every night!
1991 Okinawa again - Camp Schwab, NTA again. This time no ROK, and no Camp Fuji, kind of sucked staying on the Rock the whole time. Major softball tourneys, and lots of time in the gym!
1992 Camp Lejeune - FAP to HQSBN - Where else, the gym! Did 6 mos. but then went back to my unit - Kilo 3/6
1993 Switched from 0351 back to 3rd Platoon as 3rd Sqd Leader. Gave it my best as I had a whole new squad of young Marines just in from SOI and MCT. Tried my best to keep them motivated and disciplined.
1993 August - sent to Division Reproduction (Print Shop for final 3 mos. as my unit was going on Med float).
1993 Sept. 4th early EAS due to death of brother who was an Army Sgt. at Defense Language Institute at Ford Ord, CA.

Originally, I was planning on the day I got out as being a sort or elation of having completed my duty, but with everything that was going on in my life at the time, it wasn't all that I had hoped for, only a sad day.

Went on to play college football at University of Hawaii, and re-trained into the Computer Field through the VA and GI Bill. Landed a job with Secret Clearance at Pearl Harbor in 2001-2006. Now working as a Systems Admin with BNSF Railway in Fort Worth, TX.

Hope I didn't bore ya to death.

"RAM MAN".........

Sorry but that would be impossible for two reasons. One, my current age & CRS sufferer..."Can't Remember ****" and two, I did not
arrive in Da Nang until the first week of April 1967. I do remember a shuttle < C-130 > hop to Phu Bai though a few days later...after a few
rocket and mortar attacks. It was like a welcoming committee....Welcome

Dang. Got out. just a month or so after the first wife left, threw everything in the dumpster, and put the rest on my Harley, and hit the road fer a year. Memory'll have to do. Y'all heard it before, but here goes. Boot, Platoon 1083, last of July to October something 1976. Millington from October 76 to April 77. Mos school( Can't remember what it was called) April to dang'ed if I remember of 77.Sometime in July or early August, I think. HMT-301 from then to when I went to HMH-361 all @ Tustin. Did a few trips to boats and Pendleton and such. Nothing much. Did the K-Bay thing 79-80 with HMH-265. Then to HMT-301 til I got out in 83. Not a very distinguished career, but a Marine career nonetheless. (Yeah, yeah, yeah, I did the dead people thing..." I think I got John's leg over here" " No, I got it over here" " *******. Why didn't he have his dogtag in his bootlace like he was supposed to." " Let 'em sort it out back at the base, then. Put it over here with the other parts." Thinking to myself, I don't want to remember this. I don't want to remember this.)) Until a few weeks ago, I didn't. Part of the reason I've been such an ass here and there lately. Sorry, folks.

It has taken me a long time as well, I think at 70 I'm running out forgetting time.

I was a Drill Instructor at MCRD San Diego during your time there. 1st Bn., by the little PX in Quonset huts.

Boot Camp in 1968, San Diego; (DIs were Staff Sgt. Corps and Sgt. Lombardi and Sgt. McClure). I was a squad leader. Training at NAS Memphis - MOS 6062 - A/C repair and egress systems mechanics (Ejection seats). My first duty station (1968) was MAG 26 at MCAS New River, NC, where we worked on Hueys (which have no A/C or ejection seats) so we worked on life preservers and fire extinguishers. After staging at Camp Pendleton (1969) I was transferred to NAS Futenma, Okinawa with VMO 6 where we worked on Hueys and OV-10 Bronchos. While there we were assigned to training missions in the PI (Subic Bay) and Tokyo. When my tour was over (1970) I was transferred stateside to NAS Dallas, TX where we worked on A-4s for the reserves. Honorably Discharged in 1970 as an E-4 with a National Defence Service Medal and a Good Conduct Medal.

Yes we are on the same page with the SSGT Vines that has the voice that you could hear from across the parade deck.I heard that after our series he went on to be the top Drill Seargent of all the series, after that I lost contact. I have to say if it wasnt for him I wouldnt have made it as far as I did. I would like to say thanks to him if there is any way to contact him.

Clint, my brother and I were also in MCRD San Diago Plt 3030 April Aug 92 SDI SSGT "Vicious"Vines. You might remember the Devine brothers or as they sometimes referred to us as "Big brother and Little brother Devine"

SgtMaj Vines was a great SgtMaj for us at MALS-13. He really took care of us.

I remember a buddy of mine who was a former Army, now Marine was new to our unit. He walked by SgtMaj Vines and said "oohrah SgtMaj" to SgtMaj Vines.

SgtMaj Vines stopped him and asked him if he even knew what that meant.

The LCpl's response......"Everything but no?"

P.S. I did not realize you are Ron McCormick. Your Ronbo site is fabulous, I know how much hard work goes into creating and maintaining a site. I'm trying to find the memorial service video that was mentioned somewhere in my searching. Meanwhile, I joined the facebook group. I use facebook to keep up with my son in Tennessee and my Marine, now at Twentynine Palms training with 0621 FRO, Bravo Co. I'm new to most of the military "stuff", and I don't want to offend anybody by joining the facebook group, so if you'd give me a nudge if I offend anybody, I'll be still. Thank you for serving, thank you for the memorial site, especially your mention of your faith. God bless you in all your endeavors.

His kid too,

After going through basic at MCRD San Diego, I went through ITS up in Camp Pendleton. Got shipped across the country to Camp LeJeune and joined Fox 2/4 where I spent just under 3 years.
I did a 6 month Okinawa deployment and participated in "Team Spirit '87".
Went to the Med on the USS Guam after that in '88. We were part of the USS Kennedy Carrier group that engaged those Mig 23's from Libya. On the USS Guam, we were all set to launch in our CH-46's and 53's. We sat in those ready rooms for HOURS!!! Nothing ever came of that other than those MIG's getting splashed as far as we were concerned.
After we got back from the Med in '88 I was detached to the USS. Boulder to do the "Great Lakes Cruise '89". Being that I am from Detroit that was a nice reprieve and a very good time even though it was a glorified "dog and pony show"
As soon as I got back from that I was sent to India 3/6 and soon thereafter found myself on a plane to Panama where I took part in "Operation Just Cause".

Can anyone tell me what it'll be like there? I went there for MCT but of course as a student. I'm very disappointed that I'm going to be stuck at SOI for the next three years but I am trying my best to stay positive and motivated! There's an old saying, bloom where you're planted....

Look at it this way, you're in a good place to learn the ropes and different jobs within your MOS...operating, 1st esch maint, the maint cycle, maint procedures, MIMMS etc.

Ya gotta do the time at the bottom dude...we've all done it...just do the best you can with what you got, don't get in trouble, and you will have a good time.

Of course! I believe that I have to have that mentality in order to make the most out of this situation. It just sucks seeing the other Marines in my class get orders attaching them with grunt units and others going to cool places like Iwakuni, Japan.

I only planned on staying for four years but now I'm thinking about staying in a little longer because there is no way in heck that this is going to be my career in the Marine Corps.

Also, if you have a relatively normal work routine, a great opportunity to knock out some college free of charge.

If you want to LatMove eventually, get your ASVAB score as high as you can as that will open a lot more MOS doors to you...

Really, you have a great opportunity even if you don't see it now. You can do a lot with what you've been handed, or conversely, you can fall upon your sword. It's ultimately up to you and you alone.

The Marine Corps can be one of the highlights of your life, or it can be a never-ending nightmare if you screw it up.

How am I lucky, Corporal? :(Ya get to drive all sorts of cool vehicles. And drive all the future grunts around, and watch as they work their azzes off in the heat and dirt. How can that not be fun? Plus you will be close to a lot of sunny California beaches with all the accompaning Bikini clad bronze ladies. Another plus. Make the best of it. I originally wanted Motor-T, but ended up a 2311 (Ammo Tech). Managed to acquire a military drivers license, and had a lot of fun driving all over Camp Lejeune, NC. Duty Driver, was a hoot. Got to drive around the OD, SOG, and run errands for the CO. No work details, just driving. SF
