I feel like an antique. Life for the Woman Marine of today is a world away from the days when we were required to serve tea at the CO's mansion at PI prior to graduation. Yes, we slogged with packs and cammies, and trained with our M16's, but we were taught our sole obligation in the Corps was "To Free a Man to Fight". Our social security # were proceeeded by a 'W' so that no one would mistake us for the male Marines. (even on the dog tags we wore on our less-than-masculine chests) We slept in segregated barracks that had a chaparoned visiting area where we could entertain our guests and we were not allowed in the club without a male escort. I reached the rank of Sgt, drilled my men, and put up with sexual harrassment before I even knew there was a term for such a thing. I enjoyed the Marine Corps, fulfilled my 6 yr enlistment. One of my finest memories is of a fellow Marine, who joined the LosAngeles Police Dept, coming back to the Unit for a visit and wanting to take my picture so he could show the other cadet officers 'what a REAL Marine looks like'.

Here's my tour, such as it is:
PISC Oct '81-Jan '82 ('celebrated' my 18th birthday with IPT)
ScholsBn, Camp Pen '82
Btry B, 1/14 Pico Rivera CA (heavy arty) '82- '83
Co B, 6thEngrSptBn,(combat engineers) South Bend, IN '83-'86
Comm Co, Ft Wayne, IN '86-'87

TAD at the following:
'82 Camp Lejuene
'83 Camp Pen
'84 Camp Rilea, OR (army base)
'85 Camp Rilea, OR
'86 Ft Carson, CO (army) for combined forces live-fire exercise. CSSD 43

as I am a young grunt i'll see if I can blurt this out. Boot plt 2009, May 66 to July 66 ITR July to Sept 66 Staging bat. and got to take a slow trip on a slow boat to Viet Nam aboard the MSTS Walker. Did that amfib at Chu Lia Viet nam 3Jan67 after our fun 6 days of beach combing sent to Kilo,4th bat 11th mar 1st mardiv fmf pac, wounded june 67 and again 2Sept67. Took the slow boat to ukuska until 22Nov67 back to the bush to do a little FO stuff to find those pesky old SAM sites rotated 25 Feb 68 that was the day that charlie blew the amo dump what a big boom. Did my last 45 days as a chaser at the brig Camp Pendleton. I was put out and told thanks but we won't need you any more. You set off the medal detectors too much..So I went to the VA to get some of that good old med help. Tried to fix the bum leg without much success, so after 30 years the VA said that , that little bit of lead next to my heart must affect the way it works. So the good ol boys at the VA "gave" me a 100%. I told them thank you very much. Been putsen around the base ever chance I get. Love the smell to JP in the mornings. umum good. Thanks for the time Cpl . CWSAFFELS

Hey leroy8541, give us a first-hand idea of the difference between the corps and the army.
A lotta doggies say there isn't any difference.

Ok, I'm not the one for whom this reply was intended, but whoever said there's no difference is FULL OF SH*T. Refer to the section after my Marine assignments

Mar '85-May '85 PISC Plt 11b, L Co (SDI SSgt Randall)

Oct '85-Dec '88 MCAS New River NC MWSG 27 Det A
which was redesignated MWSS 272
Jan '89-ETS BSSG 1 MCAS Kaneohe Bay, HI

tried to get back into the Corps but there wasn't any room for prior service, they were after the high school grads

Sep '97-Nov '97 Fort Jackson SC
Dec '97-Oct '98 Office of the Staff Judge Advocate, Ft Bliss, TX
(*side note: I used to go the longer route back to work after lunch so I could watch the Marines marching back to class at the ADA School)
break in service...all of 17 months
Feb '01-Dec '02 HHC 159th Avn Brigade, Ft Campbell
Jan '03-Jan '04 Yongsan Korea
and then back to Campbell

As a Marine in boot camp, I was taught honor, duty, loyalty, discipline, respect, obedience to orders, how to shine my boots and brass, how to have pride in myself, the Corps and my uniform, and alot of Marine Corps history.
When I enlisted in the Army I had to go to basic training because I'd been out for so long. And I didn't learn any of this stuff in the Army. I was the only one to spit shine my boots at any point in training, I was definitely the only one bummed cuz I couldn't starch and press my uniform, when we were issued our M16's, I ended up "pushing" because I had mine completely disassembled before the drill sergeant could finish demonstrating how to remove the sling, one of my drill sergeants was also a former Marine & the only one to raise his voice the entire time I was there (that gave me goosebumps! I loved it!), he was also the one that, when we were learning drill, if the trainees seemed to have difficulty learning the commands or how to execute the movements, I heard "Hey, Jarhead, get up here and show these knuckleheads how it's done." Funny thing, once the others in my platoon realized I'd spent my time in the Corps, they'd ask me questions about certain parts of training....like the gas chamber. They tended to not believe me until they all had burning eyes and snot running out of their noses. They didn't believe my stories about Rifle PT until they found out how an 8-9 pound weapon can eventually feel like 150 pounds when being held out in front of you at shoulder height.

PS I can still sing the entire Marine Corps hymn and can't even tell you how the "Army Song" starts.

Jumpin' out of perfectly good aircraft.......

....Je-sus Kee-rist........what the hell's wrong with you people anyway!

I still wish they would have let me jump.

I begged to, but was told only one slot in the whole Corps for a WM to jump and the billet was for a Capt.

Damn near had me bound for OCS.

My baby brother ended up in the 82nd airborne and calls me "LEG!" at every holiday dinner. I, of course, tell him he was "chickento go Army," and to "pass the salt, birdsh*t. "

proud to even be here. Because of you and all the other Marines of your time we are as free as we are today. I have the upmost respect for you and the Marines of your time. THANK YOU FOR WHAT YOU DID. I made a anfip landing in Viet Nam on a hot beach in Chu Lia RVN IN 66 so I know a little of how it was . Never, never have I been that scared before or after the landing. I know fear but nothing like that. All the practice can NOT prepair you for the fear that gos with a hot beach. Sempri Fi.

CWSaffels, Please do not thank me. It is an act of one of my men that I am here at 87 years old. D-Day plus 14, I stepped on a cluster bomb, but it was defective. Instead of blowing in a 360, it only blew partially. I was hit in the left kidney, leg, arm, and lost a few fingers, but I was alive. One of my guys dragged me back to the beach again for the medics. He lost his life on the way back to the group. Most of my Men were not as lucky as I.

One of my fathers & his brother associates an American Jew was shot down over Germany. He was an Illinois State champion wrestler. He said the German farmers were hanging him from a tree and every-time they tried hoisting him he would first yell out either in German, Polish, English or Yiddish. It bought him enough time so that the German soldiers finally arrived and took him prisoner. His dog tags said he was a Jew. His name (sp) Hi-less, a sign painter Chicago.

I had an 0800 MOS out of boot. That's how I ended up in Amtracs. Those were the old LVTH6 models with a 105 howitzer mounted in a turret (see http://www.amtrac.org/2atmc/Tracs/gen2.asp.) When the company was disbanded in the summer of 62, I had an 0844 Fire Controlman MOS and went to A-1-11. With the Cuban crisis, I got transferred to 4.2" Mortars which was assigned to the 5th MEB and sent to Guantanamo Bay. We were on the airfiled side of the base for the duration.

Looked at some posts, to see if there were any from my time. Didn't see too many. Parris Is. 4/52 to 6/52, PI Casual Co. 6/52 to 7/52, Sea School at Portsmouth, Va, 7/52 to 9/52, USS Lake Champlain CVA 39 9/52 to 8/54, GdCO, MpBN, Camp Lejeune, N.C. 9/54 to 3/55.
Like most I had some good duty, some not so good. Sea Duty when it happened was boring, but when I look at it now, I think, WOW. Did I really get to all those places? Port-au-Prince, nasty, Lisbon, wonderful, Sasebo, another nasty, but Hong Kong, now that was fun.
Had the colors detail at Camp Lejeune, in front of Bldg. !. Every morning, we had two generals for an audience, MaJ.Gen Noble, and MaJ. Gen Puller. We were real careful.

Wish you all well.
