I never saw but one tank when I was in Vietnam. We, my squad, used it for a ride down to Nucc Man on Highway 1. That was it! Maybe someoine can tell me how many tanks were in Vietnam! We were fighting where tanks could not go, and except for defense of bridges, like at Nucc Man, where there was a bidge, I only saw that one. I understand that they were used in the City of Hue, but that was after my time.

Bet you don't remember seeing eight foot, parabolic, dish antennas, either, but I can assure you they were scattered all over the hills of Vietnam. Even had a few getting blown to hell at Khe Sanh.

I've met John. He is a bonafied survivor of '68 Tet, and was in one of those tanks saving Marine lives, and hammering "luke the gook" at Hue.

You guys are talking about the Northern I Corps Area. I was in Chu Lai in 65-66. Rice paddies all over the place. There were nothing, short of Highway 1, that could support tanks, unless of course, you wanted to attack the Grunt positions, on the outer stretch of the Chu Lai Perimeter, from the rear.

There were very few times we used 6x6 transportation, or even Amtrak. It was just not feasible to use them. they were just too noisy and cumbersome, and they could not go where we fought the enemy.

We fought in much smaller units in the Chu Lai area. Operation Texas and Operation Utah were examples of what we did! We would send out small units, sometimes with Soldiers with bright Yellow Chevrons pasted on their uniforms in our CP Groups to attract the enemy, and when we were hit, the sky would fill with helicopters of other Marine units, landing in different grids to act as either blocking forces or pushing forces (Hammer and Anvil tactics), but never tanks, or traks.

The tactics were different from DaNang northward to the DMZ. There were more populated city like areas there, and there were better roads there, and with the proximity with the North, I imagine, there was greater use of electronic wizz-bangs and other gadgets in that sector, as well as firebases.

As far as the large disks, Radio, I never saw one of them either, again, the Northern Sector of I Corps maybe, but not where I was at. It was two different wars and tactics separated by one hundred miles of rice paddies and Fifty years of technology.

We did a lot of work with CA Teams and working with the PF in the South of I Corps. Later I understand, when the 7th went North, this tactic of CA Teams was put in to use in the Northern Sector, but, by that time, I was in a hospital in NYC.

Missed it by just that much (<), Agent 99!

http://www.amtrac.org/ (Tracs)
I was talking of the Northern Area. Tracs and Tanks were in place from Phu Bai on up to Khe Sanh.
If you're interesed try the above link for Tracs and Infantry tactics.
We were recognized officially by the Commandant as AMGRUNTS.
Parabolics were in place in the Northern I Corp area. Not so much toward Cua Viet (Gulf of Tonkin) as toward the Rock Pile and Ghio Linh. There were a couple of higher elevations that spouted them. Furtherest South I ever got was Dana Nang. Second Tour. I was Wing by then.
Trac motto. Why walk when you can ride.
Wing. Why ride when you can fly.

I, too, was in the Electronics Main. Plt, Hdqtrs Co., 8th Communications Bn (1969 - April 1971). I wonder if Top Peterson was still there in 1972? If you were on base, 8th Comm, along with 8th Engrs, and 8th Motor Transport, were quartered at the "Hilton," then a relatively new barracks complex with 4 man rooms instead of squad bays and air conditioned...unbelievable!

You can always spot a pretender too. Just ask them to state their unit. If they cannot rattle if off like a tin can with a 7.62 NATO round it, then they ain't real.

Summer 1968 - MCRD San Diego, for Radio Telegraph Operator School MOS 2533

Autumn 1968 - Camp Lejeune - Counter-Guerilla Warfare School
...then Leave, and back to Pendleton, for a plane to Viet Nam, arriving in December 1968

Assigned to (I think) Charlie Battery 1/13, but I was only there for a few days...
...assigned to Bravo Company 1/3, as radioman for the point forward observer.
Cpl Kelly (aka KelDog) was my first FO, and when he rotated back, Cadigan was my second FO.

I went on R&R near the end of my tour (Taipei...Yikes!!!), and when I returned to RVN, 1/3 was standing down and returning stateside.

I did a short stretch (me and Cadigan) with an ARVN unit, trying to teach them fire direction control (what a joke), and I saw my last few firefights with the ARVNs, and realised how lame they were, compared to Marines.

Then I went to DaNang, and hung out with the MAW for a few weeks, until I caught a plane back stateside, arriving home on leave, December 24, 1969.

Then, I was an instructor at OCS, Quantico VA for a very brief period, but the spit and polish did not agree with me, so I volunteered to return to WestPac, and drew Kaneohe Bay Hawaii, Amtrack Battalion, as my last duty station.

I see that some of the Salt Dogs on this thread have boot Camp PLTs 234, 260,253 and as the graduation dates get more recent the PLT numbers get higher i.e. mine is MCRD San Diego PLT 3039.

Just curious on how these numbers come about? if anybody can shed some light for me that would be great

Here goes from my 66-year old memory....

I was in Platoon 272 at MCRD San Diego in 1957, the '2' because it was in the 2nd Battalion of the San Diego RTC (Recruit Training Command), and the '72' because it was the 72nd Platoon in the 2nd Battalion that formed in 1957. Also, for example, IF there was a 104th platoon in the 2nd Battalion in 1957, it would have been known as Platoon 2104. Note that RTC, MCRD San Diego, had 3 battalions in 1957, hence Platoon numbers started with 1, 2, or 3....

That's how it was back in the 'Old Corps', not sure how they do it now...!!

Also, the Platoon numbers get 'reset', 201, 202, etc, when the next year rolls around....
Also, I am assuming that Parris Island used the same system...???

Cheers/ Dennis Skiffington, Cpl USMC, 1957-1961.

Ed: I'm new to this site, and have been doing a LOT of browsing... Noticed earlier today another post of yours about you being in VMA-211 (or 212?), MAG-13. Then see this post about you being at KBay, then Atsugi, the KBay again. By any chance were you on that wonderful 22-day, 6-ship, LST cruise from Japan to Hawaii in early 1959 when most of MAG-13 went back to KBay from Atsugi. I was in MACS-2 at the time, joined them in Japan, then rode the LST 'Tom Green County' back to KBay. From my 66-year-old memory we were in barracks 225 at KBay, right next to VMA-211 (or was it 212 ??). Cheers/ Dennis Skiffington askiff@bellsouth.net

Just curious on how these numbers come about? if anybody can shed some light for me that would be great

My Plt number was 2007

As far as I know, the first number in a 4 digit code is the Bn you are with at RTR. Thus, since my first digit was a 2, I was in 2nd Bn (Which I was actually in 2nd Bn). Then, starting with the new year, they go by the first Plt that started that year. For example, 2001 was the first Plt, 2002 was the 2nd, etc..., in 2nd Bn for that given year. In my case, my Company consisted of Plt's 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007. The next time that 2nd Bn would have started a new rotation with a new Company, then the Plt's would have been 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014, and on an on in a systematic assignment basis. I dunno why they skipped numbers though, such as plt 2004 and 2011.

If I understand correctly, it worked pretty much the same way with the old number system using 3 digits, such as 139, 227, 389..., but don't quote me on that. I could be wrong.

....my 2 cents....

Just a quick question here.... so you have to put your "2 cents" in, but its value is only "A penny's worth". Who gets that extra penny?

I was a hollywood Marine, sunglasses and suntan lotion were basic issue. I then went to infantry school at camp pendelton. My real first duty station was "F" 2/3 1st Marine Brigade. I don't know if they consider it a brigade any more. Then on to "C" 1/3. Next was Marine Barracks Hawaii. From there I went to "C" 1/5. California wasn't so bad but I sure missed Hawaii. Next was WTBN Quantico. My orders were originally for TBS but the powers that be discovered that I knew how to shoot and was good at teaching others how to shoot so to the rifle range I went. After that I got a civilian traffic citation and an over zealous caption had my promotion revoked, so I got out as a sergeant after 13 years and my next duty station was camp living room.

MALS-11 mostly.

Went Iwakuni wespac with VMFA-323 which was extended by Desert Storm. Spent the war in the PI, Cubi Pt. Left right before Pinataube blew.

So that was what, MALS-12 I guess?

WTI in Yuma before the wespac, Millington of course, Framp in Whidbey Island, another Framp at Cecil Field.

Then my last squadron was VMFA(AW) 225. That was in El Toro, as was the MALS time.

What shop were you in?
I transfered for 101 to 323 after you guys got back to El Toro. I was in P/L.

10-01-06, 10:01 PM
I was metal shop. And I just read back over my original post. When I said I went with 323, I went in support of 323 via MALS-11. Never really got to know the guys in 323 very well. Partyied with some of them on a regular basis for awhile overseas, but no lasting friendships.

We got back right before the war was over, and I was technically still an A6 mech though I only worked on a few A6 parts. So they were going to send me to the stumps for a school on the M60, and I was going to go to Iraq as crewmember in a helo squadron. I thought that sounded pretty cool, but then the war was over.

A few months later, VMFA-225 stood up, and I was sent there. Didn't think I wanted to go O level, but I really enjoyed it. I actually had a working relationship with the officers, the SgtMaj, the S1, it was just a tighter unit, and I liked it much better than I level. (Though of course, I learned a lot more at I level.)

Was with 1/1/1 for the Cuban Cr. Went down on the USS. Henrico.
Got sent to GUTMO. when I got back from Nam.

After B/1/11 got to El Toro MCAB from Pendleton, we all got new flak jacket/briefs and gas masks, then they put us on a MATS 707 Jet and 7 1/2 hours later we were in Gitmo. We supported 2/1 with 105mm Howitzers. I believe we were the first reinforcements to the garrison's reinforced rifle company.

After our Howitzers came in by prop, we tried to make our force look larger to the Cuban workers on base by changing our tactical markings and driving back through Mainside a couple of times.

We em-placed our guns behind Mainside by the beach, great snorkeling after things cooled down. A Caribbean vacation I'll never forget. Always wanted to go to Cuba. I'd like to go back again to where we dug in, to see if the our old FDC bunker was still there; I bet by now the termites ate through the wooden beams of the roof that held the sand bags.

The USS Iwo Jima picked us up and we were in Panama Dec 1st. It was wall to wall black girls there, even the CO had one on bouncing on his lap in in a bar, lol. They were bringing Marines back to the ship on stretchers. Whole streets were off limits, guarded by Marine MP Lieutenants. My buddy hooked up with a hooker and she said her husband was in the Missile Crisis too, Castro's army, lol.

It was hard to tie one on it was so hot and humid, you sweat it out so fast as you drank . I almost got arrested by a Panamanian cop after him and a taxi cab driver tried shaking me and my buddy down. I told him I wanted an MP and he told me you are not in America now, you are in Panama now ! I told him, "fuk you, and Fuk Panama !" We only paid the agreed cab fare, not double.
