BEAUFORT, S.C. — The commander of the Marine Corps Air Station at Beaufort warns that the South Carolina base's future depends on how the military assigns its new F-35 fighter jets.

The Beaufort Gazette reported that Col. John Snider was one 10 military commanders from around the state to meet with Gov. Mark Sanford on Tuesday.

The Navy has proposed basing three squadrons of the jets in Beaufort.

But North Carolina's Gov. Beverly Perdue and U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan would like all 11 active-duty squadrons assigned to Cherry Point in their state.

That would leave Beaufort only two training squadrons. Snider warns if that happens, the Beaufort base would be smaller and in more danger of being closed.
