If I remember right, it was popularized in the movie Battleground, with Van Johnson about the 442nd Niesie (Japanese American)
Army Regt.

"Jodie" was used to humanize the term "dogface" in the army marching chant which began-

I had a good home, but I left,
you're right.

Sound off, cadence count
one, two, three, four

And then it went on to chant stories about "jodie".

(They still looked like a pond of ducks bobbing for minnows when they marched.)

Jodie, was the catchall name for the civilians back home trying or taking a Marine's or "Dogface's girl.
In some instances, Jodie had already taken his girl or she had written that serviceman a "Dear John" letter.
So you have "John" against "Jodie".
Jodie, is always looked on as 6'4" but in reality he might have been any height.
There wasn't much that "John" could about "Jodie" out in the Far East or in Europe.
So "Jodie" was the bad dude to "Poor John".
"Jodie" might still be alive today.
Especially with our commitments in the War against terrorism.
