POSTED: 10:39 am MDT June 18, 2010 CNET.

<!--startindex-->A new Senate bill, sponsored by Senator Joseph Lieberman, proposes to give the president the authority "to seize control of or even shut down portions of the Internet," according to CNET.

The authority granted to the government in the bill, known as the Protecting Cyberspace as a National Asset Act (PCNAA), has been likened to an Internet "kill switch."

The bill would require that private companies--such as "broadband providers, search engines, or software firms," CNET explains--"immediately comply with any emergency measure or action" put in place by the Department of Homeland Security, or else face fines.

It would also see the creation of a new agency within the Department of Homeland Security, the National Center for Cybersecurity and Communications (NCCC). Any private company reliant on "the Internet, the telephone system, or any other component of the U.S. 'information infrastructure'" would be "subject to command" by the NCCC, and some would be required to engage in "information sharing" with the agency, says CBS4.

Interesting post Rocky, thank you!

I was wondering what Al Gore, Internet inventor thinks about all this? When the "kill switch" is pulled, will my screen say "You've Been Gored"

Just wondering!!!!

'Engage in information sharing'? A politically correct way to say 'illegal search'.

As always, Commander O'Shea offers us good information. We should learn from it. We're all saying the same thing, just wording it differently. What I wonder about is, what did we need with new alphabet soup agencies, when we already had the FBI, the NIA, The NSA, and all of the other law enforcement agencies we have in this country?? Even the States have 'Under cover' agencies, who don't hesitate to invade our privacy, if the mood strikes them. I'm all for law enforcement, but when they start reading our mail, I get a little bit nervous. S/F!!! Ken

The liberals wanted to impeach W for the Patriot ACT- checking library cards and monitoring incoming calls from the middle east,it was said to be Orwellian, but a kill switch for the internet is acceptable by the same liberals!

September 11, 2001, the FAA pulled the Kill Switch to air traffic when we were under attack. No one questioned if it was the right call.

China, Iran, Syria, and North Korea have dedicated Cyber Warfare Units. Use the Warrior part of your brain! Of course we need a Internet kill switch.

Its not the Same wing. The internet is NOT the big highway in the sky, its the info super highway. You cant really censor a flight, just cancel it. .The internet is almost boundless. Why give Boundless power to the same people who spend 500000 on research for ketchup ? Even Austraila has censored internet. Fu(k that. We need far less government

Liberty for security anyone?

Educate yourself and spend 10 minutes researching Cyber Warfare. You might also want to take another look at the Marine Handbook and look up Avenues of Approach.

That is unless you really want Chinese Hackers shutting down our national information infrastructure.

Since we have had, for years, a program called, ' Mutually Assured Destruction', (Being researched, in regard to our nuclear defenses. I don't know how far that has gone.) Don't you suppose, that the brain tanks in this country could build a system that could, upon detection of a cyber-defence reaction system that could retaliate instantly, to any such attack ? Or would that be politically unfavorable, in the minds of the weenies we have running this lash-up ? :flag: S/F!!! Ken
