Smitty, you said it all in your opening line. Sgt Peck, if you are not aware is now a quad-amputee at Bethesda. He may or may not make it. I just wanted to put a face with the name. Thank you for posting

Well for my fellow Air Crews we have seen the bad part of seeing our brothers and sisters wounded and hurt in all eras, for we do the Air Medivacs and see the true spirit of duty first hand. There is a hard feeling by us Air Crews knowing when going into a LZ for a Medivac or Medivacs. We will do everything to get in and get you out of there and back to rear to Medical, and protect each and everyone one of you. This is how all Air Crews feel about this issue, not just Swing With The Wing. Help with all the wounded and may God help that there are no more. Help that Cpl Peck does not feel pain. God Bless the dust of Crews that go into the LZs to help our Brothers and Sisters.

CALEDONIA — Nearly two weeks after being critically wounded in Afghanistan, a Boone County Marine is continuing to fight for his life.

Cpl. John Peck, 24, a former Rockford Jefferson High School and Antioch High School student, lost both of his legs and an arm when an improvised explosive device detonated on May 23.

In an article published in Sunday’s Rockford Register Star, it was reported that Peck’s U.S.-bound flight was diverted May 29 from Germany to Canada after his vital signs deteriorated.

Sunday, the injured Marine arrived at Maryland’s Bethesda Naval Hospital, in critical but stable condition, where his wife, Kristen; mother, Lisa Krutyholowa; and grandfather, Richard Piper, are at his side.

Still in a coma
Peck’s grandmother, Deb Piper of Caledonia, is still in Illinois, but remains in daily contact with the three. She said her grandson’s temperature spiked to 105 degrees Friday, and he is still in a drug-induced coma.

“They have got so many machines on him, they’re afraid if they allow him to wake up he would fight the equipment.”

Richard Piper also shared in an e-mail Friday to the Rockford Register Star that his grandson is now a quadruple amputee.

He wrote: “Since John arrived here on Sunday he has been in surgery every day with the exception of Wednesday. The doctors have had to make a lot of decisions if rest or surgery would best serve him. Each time he went into surgery he has had numerous doctors and staff assisting him and most of the surgeries have lasted upward of four hours, a real strain on John’s body. We know that many times he has had six or more doctors attending to him. Yesterday, the doctors had another difficult decision to make. They had to remove his left hand.

“John has now lost both legs, one at the hip, the other midthigh, both hands and part of each arm, one slightly above the elbow and the other midway down his lower arm. ... We hope and pray that it will stop at these points, but it depends on how the tissue responds and heals. The left leg has been a problem for the doctors, and they have had to continually amputate slightly more to find healthy tissue. As has been said many times by John’s doctors, ‘His life is hanging by a thread.’ But John does continue to fight for his life. God bless him.”

Prayer message posted
Deb Piper is an employee at Orthopedic Rehab Specialists in Byron. The medical facility’s main office in Rockford recently posted a message on its Perryville Road marquee expressing the sentiments of all in the Rock River Valley: “Sending Prayers to Cpl. John Peck and his family.”

Peggy Kruger, the ORS business manager in Rockford, said it was co-owner David Black’s idea to post the message.

“We wish there was more we could do,” she said. “We’re a tight-knit group of 40 people working in four offices in Rockford, Byron, Dixon and Belvidere, and we’re just trying to be supportive and bring awareness to the area. We’re all sitting here happy and healthy, but there are people over there giving their lives for us, and they are so young.”

There is another posting for John, I copied my wife posting.

Hello everyone. First, I want to Thank my husband for keeping you all updated. Second, I'd like to Thank all of you for your prayers. Please keep them coming.

John comes from a very strong and patriotic family. We believe in God and our Country.

Per the Orthopedic Surgeon on June 3rd, John's amputations are his left arm is mid forearm, his right arm is above the elbow, his left leg is at the hip (he does have tissue from his leg but no bone), and his right leg is through the knee.

I tell everyone that "he has a long road ahead of him and a strong family behind him." I also tell people that say it's a shame and we shouldn't be overseas that "I, my brother, and now my son fight for their right to have freedom of speech."

They backed off John's sedation today and he responded to yes or no questions in regards to his pain and comfort levels (he is comfortable). He also responded to commands to open and close his eyes. He is on a ventilator so he can't talk but that maybe coming off in the next few days.

He will be going back to surgery tomorrow (Monday, June 7th) to clean out his wounds. He is suffering from a periodic temp which they are treating with abdominal cooling pads. This seems to be working.

I have been stuck in my room for the last two days with a lung infection. I wouldn't want to give anything to John, the wonderful people taking care of him, or any of the other soldier (or patients) in the hospital.

If anyone would like to send John written notes, cards, or letters (which either his wife, myself, or his grandfather will read to him) please send them to the address below. The picture I have posted with my profile is my "baby boy".

God Bless all of you
Lisa

John had surgery on Sunday, they prepped his right arm for closure, cleaned his left arm and right leg. They removed all the tissue from his left leg and if they need to take any more they will be into his hip. His stomach was leaking fluid, the fascia of his stomach had detached and was not healing properly so they put in a wound pack. On Monday they let him rest, no surgery. Today his eyes were wide open and he was fighting the respirator and moving his right arm as though he was trying to pull the ventilator out they needed to sedate him to calm him down. John is scheduled for surgery on Wednesday to clean his wounds; possibly closing his stomach, they will be putting in a trach tube and a feeding tube in his stomach, removing the ventilator from his mouth and the NG tube. John is also suffering from a bacterial infection in his blood.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

That is truly sad that something like this has happened. But I am not surprised that he is still hanging in there, to give up is just to easy and something we don't do.

S/F Cpl, you're in my prayers

I haven’t sent an update as the girls (Katrina, Alysia) and I are now in Bethesda MD, John Grandmother (Debbie Piper) arrived today. Please note John’s condition has changed and it’s not good. John is scheduled for another surgery on Friday (#11) and has been given as of earlier today a minimum of 26 pints of blood. He has a bacterial infection in his blood that is taking a toll on his already traumatized body and the Dr’s are very concerned about his condition. The thread that he has been hanging on with is turning into just a fiber.
John needs all the prayers he can get.
Thanbk you all,
Zenio & Lisa
