Hey everyone. I have qualed with the rifle three times since I've been in, and two of those times were expert. But they were not two consecutive years in a row (shot marksman my second year, for whatever reason). Do my expert scores have to be back-to-back in order to rate the "2nd Award" rung on my expert badge? I can't seem to find an MCO or Maradmin number on this anywhere... I've even tried looking in the uniform regulations order, but it doesn't say anywhere within it.

Thanks

No it is not consecutive but you must wear your most current. In your case it would be a expert badge with a second award bar. Shoot Marksman next year and you would have to wear a marksman badge until you qualify again. It doesn't zero out your previous quals though.

I thought it did have to be consecutive. I will have to research this.

Everything I have found has said nothing of it having to be consecutive.

Same thing happened with me. Marksman, Expert, Sharpshooter and Expert again. I/you rate the '2nd award' bar. So rock it!

Does not need to be consecutive. It's simply saying how many times you have shot expert!

I shot Sharpshooter in boot, expert my second go around, then my third go around I shot Marksman. No excuses :(

Do you know if there is a Maradmin or MCO that I can pull that from? Just in case.

Waste your time looking up all the MCO's and all the other orders you can find. But I'll tell you again, especially after I worked on a range qualifying Marines for 4 years that it DOES NOT have to be consecutive. You rate how many times you shot it. But keep in mind that you also only rate to wear what you earned last.

Plain and simple, end of story.

Most Marines don't qualify with the M9, some sailors do, especially Corpsman. But not many Marines do.

Even if it's supposed to be consecutive, I've never seen Marines actually care if all their experts were consecutive.

It is NOT consecutive. While there are NO orders stating either way, 'tradition' dictates that once you earn Expert, the next time you fire Expert, even if it's 4 years later, you 'rate' the next "Level up" and can wear it.

However, you MUST (as has been stated) wear your 'most current' qualification.

To answer your question, NO, they do not have to be subsequent awards. Here's the Marine Corps Order where it can be found.

http://www.marines.mil/news/publications/Pages/Publications135.aspx (mhtml:{24B0F853-4E0F-442D-A935-318D7CD2A74A}mid://00000001/!x-usc:http://www.marines.mil/news/publications/Pages/Publications135.aspx)

Go to paragraph 1008 on pages 1-5 and 1-6.

You should've listened to "The Wookie" when he stated this previously, the Sergeant spent 4 years on the range qualifying Marines, he'd know the regulations.

Thank you very much for posting that. I was in error about it not being in regulation.

Here, for those who may not be able to hit that site, is the quote, direct from MCO 3574.2K, Dtd 1 Aug 2007:

1008. Awards
1. Rifle Qualification Badge. Successful completion of both Tables 1/1A and
2 determines the type of classification the Marine will receive. Once these
Tables have been mastered, the Rifle Qualification Badge is awarded based
upon the passing aggregate score achieved on the Table 1/1A and Table 2
evaluations. Total points determine the classification of Expert,
Sharpshooter, or Marksman. For specifics regarding the means by which a
Marine attains this classification refer to Chapter 1, Paragraph 1006 and
1007 of this Order.

a. The wearing of the appropriate qualification badge is authorized
until the individual fails to re-qualify or re-qualifies in another
classification. Marines who fail a re-evaluation attempt are not authorized
to wear a badge for that weapon until they do qualify.

b. Marines who are not required to fire for re-qualification will wear
their last qualification/re-qualification badge.

2. Re-qualification Bars
a. When a Marine who has qualified as an Expert the previous year requalifies
as an Expert with the rifle on a re-qualification detail, that
individual earns a re-qualification bar to be attached to the Rifle Expert
Badge.

b. The first re-qualification bar earned is recognized as the second
award since the original Expert Badge was earned first. Subsequent Expert requalification Bars will be issued by the Marine’s Commanding Officer.

c. Marines are authorized the subsequent re-qualification bar each time
they fire expert for record. The Expert qualifications do not have to be
earned on back-to-back years (i.e., if a Marine fires Expert during Recruit
Training, Sharp Shooter the first year in the Operating Forces, and Expert
the third year in the Operating Forces, then the Marine rates an Expert badge
with a 2nd Award re-qualification bar for the current FY).

d. Only one re-qualification bar earned by the individual will be worn.
