Soldiers more likely to suffer mental problems: survey
Last Updated Fri, 05 Sep 2003 13:08:46
OTTAWA - Members of the Canadian military are about 50 per cent more likely to suffer the symptoms of mental illness than other Canadians, says a study released Friday.

In a supplement to a Canada-wide mental health survey released earlier this week, Statistics Canada issued a report on the mental health of the Canadian Forces.

Members of the military were excluded from the Canadian Community Health Survey, so the Forces asked Statistics Canada to look at the country's soldiers separately.

They found that 15.1 per cent of all military people had reported symptoms of alcohol dependence or at least one of the following mental disorders:

major depression
social phobia
post-traumatic stress disorder
panic disorder
general anxiety disorder.
The main survey, released on Wednesday, suggested 10 per cent of the general population had reported the same types of symptoms.

The prevalence of mental illness symptoms varied according sex, rank and whether a soldier was in the regular forces or a reservist.

Post-traumatic stress disorder was more prevalent among soldiers who had served on the most overseas deployments.

Just more than half of the regular soldiers who reported symptoms said they had sought help. Of those people, more than half said they needed help again within a year.
