I know it's not everyday that one gets to visit the pinnacle of all things Marine but I was wondering how many of you actually set foot on the black sand of Iwo Jima. I got the chance to see it back in 2002 while on the MEU, climbed Suribatchi, smelled the sulphur. So, who else has been there?

It really is something to behold. Hard to imagine those guys scaling that mountain the way they did. Truly legendary.

Anyone know if it's possible? I heard that it was closed to the public? I would be very interested to see how much it would cost, I'd love to go there with my uncle.

I was there on the anniversary in 2001. Brought back some sand and climbed Mt. Suribachi.

I went there last year to see the spot where my grandfather was KIA. Military Historical tours takes people every year for the "Reunion of Honor". My grandfather was George A. Dunn and was with Fox company, 2nd battalion, 28th regiment, 5th marine division and was KIA on green beach on 2/19/1945.
