United States Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC) is a component command of the US Special Operations Command (SOCOM) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Special_Operations_Command) that comprises the Marine Corps' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Marine_Corps) contribution to SOCOM. Its core capabilities are direct action (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct_action_(military)), special reconnaissance (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_reconnaissance) and foreign internal defense (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foreign_internal_defense). MARSOC has also been directed to conduct counter-terrorism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Counter-terrorism), information operations (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_warfare), and unconventional warfare (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unconventional_warfare).

We had a Sgt from MARSOC come to our FTAP brief trying to get us to go that route. He said that MARSOC is FR on steroids.

I just wanted to point out, before anyone reads that the wrong way. He said it was likeForce Recon on steroids, he did not say that any Marines are on steroids. Now back to your regularly scheduled programming.

Marsoc is part a Socom, so they are officially SOF. They get funding and missions from Socom.

SOF planning is from the bottom up, which is 180 from normal Mil.

Marsoc operator and Docs are type A guys, but not in the typical meathead Marine type.

wow, hold on there, if you want to make fun of me being green, why don't you go with the typical, "my boots have been in longer then you" or"these cammies have more time in service".

I'm not sure why your taking offense.

Force is a MEF asset and thus gets their funding and missions from the MEF. MSOB is a SOCOM asset, meaning that while they are still Marines, they don't actually work for the Marine Corps. The...

Why don't you explain what you meant. I'm more interested in talking about that. Or better yet, I'll be in Quantico tomorrow visiting my favorite 1st Sgt, so if you're in the area we can talk in person.

tier 2 SO? explain more
I'm not going to claim to know the specifics, but Special Operations Forces (SOF) are divided into different 'tiers' based on their training, capabilities, ect. Tier 1 is the highest and consists mainly of Joint SO units such as CAG, DevGru and other extremely highly trained units. Tier 2 is most Army SF and MSOB teams, most SEAL teams, ect. and Tier 3 are units such as the Rangers and SF support personal.

Again, this info may not be 100% accurate, as I have not seen an actual breakdown of which SF units fall into which categories. This is just information I have picked up. It's also my understanding that Tier 1 SF are the only guys qualed for Hostage Rescue ops, although I cannot confirm that.
