As far as I know right now, my brother James and I are the first two Marines in the family tree. I'm still doing research, so new information could re-arrange my present knowledge somewhat dramatically. To the best of my present knowledge there have been bonesteels serving this nation in the Armed Forces since the early 1720's. I'll post what I can, but it has not been sorted properly at this time, so bear with me. We've nbeen privates and gGenerals, served in the Colonial Army and in every major conflict since. Mr guess is, there'll be Bonesteels serving this nation in such fashion for some time to come.

This list is not complete. Some evidence has pointed to another Bonesteel who deserted to go home to work his family farm for the season. It was a common occurence. There is evidence of another Bonesteel or even two who did time at Andersonville. One account has him dying there, another has him surviving. Evidence of an un-named Bonesteel exists who was in another Confederate prison camp, but no other evidence has been found of his existence prior to or after the war at this time.

There was an un-named Bonesteel who lead a calvary troop in Colorado in the 1860's. I have yet to locate his name and unit. This again is only a partial rister of service members from this state.

POLICY AND DIRECTION: THE FIRST YEAR

The Koreans age 9

Under pressure to produce a paper as quickly as possible, members of the Policy Section began work late at night on 10 August. They discussed possible surrender zones, the allocation of American, British, Chinese, and Russian occupation troops to accept the surrender in the zone most convenient to them, the means of actually taking the surrender of the widely scattered Japanese military forces, and the position of Russia in the Far East. They quickly decided to include both provisions for splitting up the entire Far East for the surrender and definitions of the geographical limits of those zones. [16]

The Chief of the Policy Section, Col. Charles H. Bonesteel, had thirty minutes in which to dictate Paragraph 1 to a secretary, for the Joint Staff Planners and the State-War-Navy Coordinating Committee were impatiently awaiting the result of his work. Colonel Bonesteel thus somewhat hastily decided who would accept the Japanese surrender. His thoughts, with very slight revision, were incorporated into the final directive. [17]

Bonesteel's prime consideration was to establish a surrender line as far north as he thought the Soviets would accept. He knew that Russian troops could reach the southern tip of Korea before American troops could arrive. He knew also that the Russians were on the verge of moving into Korea, or were already there. The nearest American troops to Korea were on Okinawa, 600 miles away. His problem therefore was to compose a surrender arrangement which, while acceptable to the Russians, would at the same time prevent them from seizing all of Korea. If they refused to confine their advance to North Korea, the United States would be unable to stop them.

At first Bonesteel had thought of surrender zones conforming to the provincial boundary lines. But the only map he had in his office was hardly adequate for this sort of distinction. The 38th Parallel, he noted, cut Korea approximately through the middle. If this line was agreeable to President Truman and to Generalissimo Stalin, it would place Seoul and a nearby prisoner of war camp in American hands. It would also leave enough land to be apportioned to the Chinese and British if some sort of quadripartite administration became necessary. Thus he decided to use the 38th Parallel as a hypothetical line dividing the zones within which Japanese forces in Korea would surrender to appointed American and Russian authorities.

The determination of the surrender zones for the Pacific involved other countries besides Korea. Since the job had to be done in a hurry, Colonel Bonesteel had the paragraphs of the general order rushed through the Chief of the Strategy and Policy Group, Brig. Gen. George A. Lincoln, to the Joint Staff Planners who were meeting in an all-night session. This channel was the same as for all important military policy papers in 1945. Drafts were routed in turn through General Lincoln, the Joint Planners, the State-War-Navy Coordinating Committee, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the Secretaries of State, War, and Navy, until they finally reached the President.

When Bonesteel's draft paper reached the Joint Planners in the pre-dawn hours of 11 August, Admiral M. B. Gardner suggested moving the surrender line north to the 39th Parallel, a recommendation that the planners believed the Navy Secretary, James C. Forrestal, favored. Gardner pointed out that the 39th Parallel would place Dairen in the military zone to be occupied by the Americans. General Lincoln, however, felt that the Russians would hardly accept a surrender line that barred them from Dairen and other parts of the Liaotung Peninsula; besides, American units would have great difficulty reaching the Manchurian port ahead of the Russians. Calling Assistant Secretary of State James Dunn, Lincoln ascertained that his opinion was shared. Mr. Dunn believed that Korea was more important politically to the United States than Dairen, and he felt this to be the view of Secretary of State James F. Byrnes. As a result, the 38th Parallel remained in the draft when the Joint Planners handed the general order to the State-War-Navy Coordinating Committee.

The Nicholaus listed here is the Third generation of four Nicholaus/ The first immigrated from Palatine, Germeny. His wife was from Prussia. That first Niklaas Penenstehl arived in the Colonies in New York in 1710 with his wife and one son. There is evidence to suggest that he had either two sons or a younger relative with him, but I've only found the one for sure. Niklaas was in his mid forties.

General Bonesteel was apparently somehow involved in the Pueblo incident, too. I haven't had time to look it over yet.

MEMOIRS
Contribued by Betty Bonesteel Wilson

Recollections of days long past are preserved in the memories of Joannah Adams Frank with additional insight provided by Joannah Elizabeth Adams Rowe "adopted" dau. of Joannah Frank. This treasure trove covering over 100 years fills 13 legal-size pages.

1804 was the year that Aaron Adams and Elizabeth Bonesteel, (daughter of Philip Bonesteel and Maria Alendorf) gave birth to their second child, Joannah at Pine Hill in Ulster Co, NY; a daughter, Laura had arrived two years previously. Joannah Adams began her memoirs by recounting the early years in Ulster Co, where her father had built a beautiful home for his family -- a house that served as a general store and post office, a bar-room, living quarters and sleeping rooms for the black folks who worked for the family. The second floor was a ballroom which was used for dances as well as a "Free Mason's Lodge;" nearby was her father's blacksmith shop. Besides being Justice of the Peace, her father held other town offices.

Joannah's characterizations of the personalities and physical makeup of her many relatives, family slaves and description of the countryside are very vivid. Common place events are interwoven to add insight to every day life.

The War of 1812 found her father beginning military training at Staten Island, NY. He returned home six weeks later following the declaration of peace.

Aaron Adams, was elected to the NYS Legislature and it was during this period that "the bill came before the House to put in a Canal from Lake Erie to the Atlantic. When the vote was called ... His answer was 'Nay.'" Joannah recounts her father's two trips to the Genesee Country following the Legislative session in Albany. He was so impressed with the land, he purchased 160 acres and in 1814 - 1815 he sold the beautiful home at Pine Hill and moved the family to Livingston County, about two miles from Mt. Morris.

In her memoirs she wrote "if my father could have looked into the future and have seen the trouble that came to us children by this move, he would have turned back to the old home at the foot of Pine Hill. Perhaps it is best that we cannot look ahead and see what is in store for us as we journey through life."

Trouble began, the year following their move to Mt. Morris, after her father had built a house on his land. Her mother contacted typhus fever and died only to be followed to the grave just a short time later by her father. "We children were left all alone in the wilderness." Relatives advised breaking up the family so the children were scattered and never lived together again as a family.

At this juncture, apparently, Elizabeth Rowe picks up the narrative and recounts occurances told to her by Joannah Frank and blends them with her own experiences.

Joannah Adams after a time went to live with her Grandfather Bonesteel where she met, Jacob Frank a young German from Baltimore, who she married -- they moved to New Jersey where he worked in a large glass factory as a glassblower. After a period they returned to Mt. Morris where Aaron Adams Jr. resided.

To this neighborhood moved an old sea dog, Capt. Buddington from Mass, and his wife, Rhoda daughters -- Mary, Geanette and Adeline and sons Clauson, Walter, Bonaparte, Albert, and Buster (?). Mary taught school and boarded with Mrs. Frank who nursed her during an illness. She was indebted to Mrs. Frank and wished to repay her. When she learned that Mrs. Frank was wishing for a baby girl she could adopt. Mary promised if she married and had a girl, she would give it to her. As fate would have it, Mary met and fell in love and married Aaron Adams (Joannah's brother). The union produced two boys and then a baby girl. True to her promise, Mary wrote to Mrs. Frank regarding her promise, offering the baby and requesting a name for the baby. Joannah sent the name, Joannah Elizabeth. Mrs. Frank said she would not hold Mary to this promise but as circumstances have it, she came to live and belong to the Frank family. "Her mother said that Joannah should keep her. (One of the writers of these Memoirs was that little Lizzie Adams, named by my Aunt Joannah (Joannah Elizabeth Adams). She was adopted into the family of Jacob Frank and Joannah Frank December 18, 1833."

Lizzie Adams narrates the trials and travails of her real family after their move to Michigan. She and her foster family migrated to Wisconsin in 1849. Included are short biographies of Aaron and Mary's children, reminisces on farm life and family gatherings at holiday times and other thoughts, from this well of memories.

In 1911 the Memoirs end with Joannah Elizabeth Adams Rowe stating "I have had all the comforts of life these years, an old woman, and on the 28th of December I shall have passed the 80th milestone of my life's journey. I feel at peace with all the world, quietly waiting, yes, quietly waiting."

Footnote: There is another family tie to this area. Across the busy road from Eastview Mall, in the town of Victor, stands an old cobblestone house built by Mrs. Elizabeth Bonesteel Adams' brother, Philip, in the 1820's.

family members have been found named in the Alaskan Gold Rush, the California Gold Rush, and in the hisotries of various towns throughout the United States as city fathers, officials, lawyers, doctors, sheriffs, merchants, blacksmiths, state senators, and professionals and skilled laborers of all kinds. We've lead buffalo hunts, wagon trains and been Indian fighters. It all started with the dream of freedom and peace of one man...a German immigrant named Niklaas Penenstehl.
