View Full Version : Female Marine Advice Needed(ASAP PLEASE)

I leave for Recruit Training on 20100104 and I am unsure of what I should really bring to Bootcamp. Will bras, sport bras, and underwear be distributed after arrival? What about purchasing tampons or pads? Should I bring a small amount of tampons and pads, for the first month and then purchase more when needed? Also, What are the rules regarding shaving the genital area? Am I allowed to bring an address book or should I only bring a few addresses on a single sheet of paper? I have very short hair, would I be allowed to bring hair care products? I would also like to know if I should bring deodorant, body lotion, shampoo, and conditioner? Even thoughI don't think that they'll allow us more than 60 seconds to shower and then another 30 seconds to get dressed so I don't think there will be time to shampoo, condition, and/or lotion up. Please help me bring only the essentials, I am not going on vacation so I don't want to over pack in anyway possible. Any advice would be very much appreciated. Thank you for your time and wisdom.

Your recruiter should've given you a list of things that you can bring.
I hope this helps, and some of this may have changed when I was in......

--Sports bras, white...easy on, easy off...and if they still do this, you will be in a bra 24/7, even when you sleep. There's no time for fuss when you wake up in the morning.
--I believe you can still bring your own undies....plain white ones.
--Feminine products. I brought mine, but never needed them. Don't be suprised if you don't get your monthly while you're at boot camp. It happens.
--Forget shaving the female area. Legs and armpits only, and that usually happens on Sundays when you have more time.
--I believe you can bring an address book....a small one. If you don't have one, get one at the dollar store if there's one near you. They are small, not big and bulky.
--I believe you can bring shampoo. If not, your Drill Instructors will take you to the PX at 4th BN and you'll get the hygiene products you need.
--Bring plain flip-flops (shower shoes), nothing fancy.
--Underarm deodorant.
--Chapstick

DO NOT bring hairspray, whether it's a pump one or a spray can. It will get confiscated by the Drill Instructors.....anything that you shouldn't have on you, will get confiscated by the Drill Instructors.

The items listed above that you can bring, don't bring about 5 of everything. Just take one of each, and that includes the feminine products. All of what you need to bring should fit into a backpack or small luggage bag.

Remember, you are at Parris Island to train to become a Marine. It's not beauty school and it's not a beauty contest while you're there.

Best of luck to you!

I was back at Parris Island on Aug 26th to the 28th to see my nephew graduate from boot camp.
Here are some pics I took of the "Receiving building" and of 4th BN.............

This is the "Receiving building" where the famous yellow footprints are in front of. You will only go through those portals (doors) once and never exit them. You will exit the buiding through different doors.

WOW! I had flashbacks! Ain't that something? I can't remember what I had for breakfast but I can remember a 25 year old feeling I had when I first saw those barracks.
All the memories came rushing back. I had a blast going back and sharing my stories with my brother, who's a retired Marine GySgt, and former Drill Instructor. I think after 10 years, if you get the chance to go back for some reason or other, you should.
I felt PROUD to be a Marine the day I graduated boot camp, but going back after 21 years, made me feel even more PROUD to be a Marine! For me, it's a feeling that you can't describe. You just need to go back and experience it for yourself.
I even got a tour of Drill Instructor school with my brother....and that was quite an HONOR. Not everyone can get a tour of Drill Instructor school.
Ah man, if I could go back to Parris Island again tomorrow and visit, I'd be there with bells on.

Glad everyone liked the pics!

To my knowledge first and second don't share a course. That's got to be First Bt's course cause I've never seen it and I was in Second.

I didn't see 2nd BN's, that why I wasn't sure if 1st and 2nd shared or not....thanks BR. I did see 3rd's, but didn't get to take a pic of it. After we got my nephew's gear, we went looking for the "receiving building where the famous yellow footprints are" so we could get pics taken before it rained.
My brother, who went through boot camp back in 1969, was suprised to still see the steam pipes there.

I always wondered why 4th Bn's everything was so much better than everything else. Like the track...wtf is a track we had dirt and the squadbays.

Lisa 23
12-24-09, 11:06 PM
PFC, 4th BN has squad bays also. It's not no hotel over there were we all have separate rooms. The females don't live the life of luxury over there either.
I don't know when they put the track in, wasn't there when I was there in 1988, but that track is also open to the public, that is when the females aren't there. Also, the confidence course wasn't as nice as it is today, and it was in a different area. When I was there, that was our PT area. 4th BN's parade deck is about 1/4 the size of the main parade deck that the males use.
So don't think that the females have everything better than the males do, because we don't.

Thanks Marines. I really appreciate the answers to my questions, it helped out alot. I have my little bag already packed with only the necessities. Merry Late Christmas and I hope you have a wonderful New Year's Celebration!!

From a female Marine who went through boot camp a few years ago, I advise you not to bring much. You can bring a couple of plain white sports bras and a sheet of paper with a few addresses, but nothing else. Everything else will be supplied to you once you get there. There is no regulation on shaving your genitals, half the recruits did it and half didn't. As long has you don't shave it in the form of an Eagle, Globe, and Anchor, you should be fine.

Whatever your not supposed to bring will likely be trashed between MEPS and at the receiving room at the airport. Plus there will probably be a non-attribution event at receiving in PI where you can declare and dump anything else they tell you you don't need.

4th Bn looks super nice, maybe that's because its the newest or its located near officers housing or something. I always heard 3rd BN was the most ghetto, b/c it was away from everything else, but I don't know, I was in first.

Thanks for the photos WMarine, it was nice to see good ole PI. I went there to see my brother in-law graduate but didn't think to take pictures.

4th BN is located right next to Drill Instructor School.

Fourth Recruit Training Battalion
The Forth Recruit Training Battalion is led by Lieutenant Colonel Karla M. Jessup (http://www.mcrdpi.usmc.mil/training/units/rtr/4thbn/bios/4th_co.htm)and Sergeant Major Laura L. Brown (http://www.mcrdpi.usmc.mil/training/units/rtr/4thbn/bios/4th_sgtmaj.htm). Within Fourth Battalion, there are three companies: Co. N, Co. O,and Co. P. Each company contains an average of two, 50- to 60-recruit platoons. Fourth Battalion trains only female recruits.

Female Marines have trained aboard Parris Island since February 23, 1949 when 3rd RTBn. was activated aboard the Parris Island with Company K and Company L in what is now Headquarters, 6 th Marine Corps District. On 1 May 1954, 3 rd Recruit Training Battalion was re-designated as Woman Recruit Training Battalion and remained under this designation until 1976 when it was re-designated as Woman Recruit Training Command. At that time, Woman Recruit Training Command moved to a new battalion complex which it still occupies.

On 1 November 1986, Woman Recruit Training Command was re-designated as 4th RTBn. and became part of the Recruit Training Regiment. During January 1989, K and L Companies were re-designated as N and O Companies respectively due to reorganization of the regiment. In October 1996, P Company was activated in order to more effectively train the larger number of female recruits arriving on Parris Island. The 4th RTBn. complex was expanded in November 2001 with the addition of a new barracks.

Recruit training is now identical for both male and female recruits, but this is a result of many significant changes over the last 25 years. Some of the key changes were:

1978-First females graduate from Drill Instructor School.

1985-Females began firing the M16A2 for qualification, which added an additional three weeks to the female schedule.

1988-Basic Warrior Training/Marine Combat Training was incorporated into recruit training for females, adding another two weeks to the schedule.

1996-Female drill instructors were allowed to wear the Campaign Cover, replacing the scarlet cord.

1997-Marine Combat Training was removed from the female recruit training schedule with the introduction of the Crucible, resulting in the current 12-week schedule for both male and female recruits. Females Marines subsequently began attending Marine Combat Training at the School of Infantry (East) prior to follow-on military occupational specialty (MOS) training. Female Marines throughout the Marine Corps also started conducting the Physical Fitness Test (PFT) that mirrors the male PFT, adding additional physical training into the schedule.

Roughly 2,400 female recruits come through 4th RTBn. each year, trained by the very women who have seen and been part of the transformation that has brought us to where we are today.

Did someone seriously just publicly ask about shaving their pubic hair? I think there are more important things to worry about. I feel like I have answered the "what do i bring to bootcamp?" question about 27,000 times. POOLEES: BEFORE WE HAD THE INTERNET, PEOPLE SURVIVED BOOTCAMP! IF THERE WAS SOME SPECIAL THING YOU NEEDED IN BOOTCAMP, I'M SURE YOUR RECRUITER WOULD LET YOU KNOW!
Bottom line is that you don't need to bring anything. It will all be issued to you when you get there. Sure bring your addresses if you want, because they obviously will not be issued to you. As far as clothing, and tampons and everything, it will be given to you. This isn't the drill instructors' first time in the squadbay, they know what they're doing.

I am still looking to see if this can be answered......would one need be a stylist license or be an artist to accomplish this feat?

Would it have to be sketched in or painted on with Nair hair removal and then the excess washed away?

If one has a piercing how does that play in?

Or is it just a blurb on the global map?

Phantom: You'd have to cut the hair to about a quarter of an inch. Then you take a regular black pen and draw the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor on. Have a partner do the drawing to make it accurate, or use a stencile to do it yourself... unless you are confident in your ability to draw upside down. Next, take a really small/percise razor and cut away all the hair on the outside of the drawing, then focus on the details within the drawing. You may have to cut each individual hair during this stage, and use NAIR as a finishing touch to remove any remaining hair in the way, but proceed with caution- even the smallest mistake could set you back a few months to try again. Once all the hair is cut, you can either wash off the pen markings or leave it on to define the symbol so there will be no confusion as to what it is. All done!

Any questions?

Take 2 good sportsbras. One will be in the wash, you wear the other. Take a weeks worth of panties, good cotton ones. I found it very easy to take a shampoo/conditioner in one bottle...this I used to shampoo and for bodywash. You don't have much time...for everything...probably won't have too much time for shaving...but you do have an hour's freetime...do with it as you will. Everything will be taken from you that isn't essential. You will be able to purchase feminine products if you need them. Some girls had their period all the time...I never got it once. So don't worry if your system goes wierd. It's normal. You can take an address book. You can buy stationary at bootcamp. Because it's different being a woman in the Corps...don't worry about the little boys comments!

The best advice that I could give would be to just bring the clothes on your back and maybe your bible (if you are religious) with your address book in side it. Everything, I mean everything will be taken away from you at receiving, including anything hygiene items you bring. You have nothing of your own at bootcamp, it all belongs to your drill instructors and they "allow" you to use it. This includes hygiene items. They are going to have you buy everything from the px at 4th Bn anyway and put it in your whisky locker for storage. It is just easier to bring nothing and make your life easier in receiving.

As to shaving, you are going to be so tired you aren't even going to want to shave. Plus you are not allowed to have razors because so many recruits have tried to cut themselves with them that they are a controlled item. You are allowed to keep the handle to your razor but your Senior Drill Instructor will keep all the razor heads and it is a "gift" from her when the platoon is doing well if she gives them to you or not. And your scribe will issue them to you and will then have to count every single one to make sure you give them all back after your showers. If one is missing, guess what, you will never see a razor again for the rest of your time in bootcamp.

I do say bring as much white undies (grannie panties) and sports bras as you can bring. They are available to purchase at the Bn px, but I always found it easier to just have my friends send them to me in the mail. If you have good friends or parents they can always send you some nice smelling body wash, that is always a treat to get at mail call. You will be allowed to keep that from your mail call.

Just stay tough and you will make it.

Thank you for your time and wisdom.

ummm you need absolutely nothing to bring..you get it while you are there..there will be pads and tampons in the gear locker in the squadbay...or some Marine will give you some if you ned them at receiving..bring a list of the people that you want to write...and your id...THATS ALL YOU NEED!!!! I went to bootcamp on june 22...so its pretty recent and i don't think you should worry about shaving your genital area...once you hit the field its better that you don't...its meant for protection...trust me you'll be diving in mud, sand and not take showers every night when you are in the field...they just give you baby wipes...and yea no one is going to see you but other females...so yea

Holy Cow does that bring back memories!! I was in 1988. PLT 4025 (if I remember correctly...). My son graduated from 2nd BN in October. Also, I want to say to the young female who is probably in processing now (or just got picked up by her Drill Instructors), when I went back in '88 - they took everything and made us store it until we graduated. Maybe it's different, maybe not. Maybe it depends on the Drill Instructors and the command at the moment. They take you to the PX anyway to get what you need. And WMarine - you're right about the monthly. I got it once then never again until a few weeks AFTER graduation. Which - was fine by me. Good times. :o)

When in 88 were you there Marine? I was there from May till August. For the life of me, I cannot remember my PLT.... Old I guess....

Ok, "WMarine" - I'm missing or just don't see where these pics you recently took at PI are, and the link takes me to a different forum topic. I'm going on no sleep and getting some sort of sinus thing, so point me to where these are!

WOW! I had flashbacks! Ain't that something? I can't remember what I had for breakfast but I can remember a 25 year old feeling I had when I first saw those barracks.

I know this is really old...but I'm just now reading it. And you aren't kidding. I could hear the clang of water pipes, scent of musty salty air, and almost swatted my arm for fear of sand flea. Great pics Lisa.

Softball, thank you so much for sharing these photos. Me and a Marine buddy were looking at them together here at work and even though he never saw 4th Bn the photos of 3rd gave him chills just as the photos of 4th did me. I know I am late in replying to this thread but I had to at least thank you.

When I went in in June of 1990 they took all of our belongings and packed them up for storage and made us purchase everything at the PX after receiving as well. I thought to myself "Damn, I should have just brought what I was wearing and a toothbrush!"

During our 5th phase at PI I did guard duty in the 4th Bat. area a couple of times. I kept waiting for at least one of you to come on out, but you never did.
