Looked on here there is a quite a few threads about this so i apologize in advance anyways went through meps, failed the hearing test. went to a consult saw a doc she said i had some hearing loss but not enough, the loss i had was beyond speech recognition. My waiver came back denied, is there anything i can do to still try and get it in? my recruiter told me to go see my own doctor and get a letter of recommendation? also i was told that maybe writing a letter on why i want to be a Marine might possibly help? i havnt been DQ'd DOD wide yet, so im going to try my best to get in till iv exhausted every resource. Any help would be great thanks.

My hearing was good before I joined...I had a hearing test about two weeks ago and they said that if my hearing decreases at the rate it is that I'll need hearing aids in two years lol. A lot of Marines failed the damn thing haha. I guess it has to do with my job selection. Maybe they don't want to risk it because your hearing will get worse if you join.

You can try going to a hearing specialist (otologist), a medical doctor specializing in ear problems (they are certified ear, nose, and throat specialists with additional professional training specific to the ear).

Something from a family practitioner won't carry nearly as much weight as a letter from an otologist.

My hearing went from good to crap in six-years and has gotten worse over the years (gunfire, jet noise, etc). I wear hearing aids now when I want to - sometimes being hard of hearing is a blessing, especially when the ex is around.

I'm sorry....what did you say?

I've lost a bit of hearing from being on an air base for years. It sucks that something so simple is keeping of you from getting to a dream.

Thanks guys, yeah i scheduled an appointment to see a ear nose and throat specialist. Do you guys think that if i write a short letter on why i want to be Marine it may or may not help? i read one Marines post who was in the same arrangement as i and he said he wrote a letter and it helped, his waiver came back approved...

You never know till your done trying. Black and white, there are hearing threshold limits. You are beyond limit. However, nothing is impossible, just a little harder to overcome.

It wouldn't hurt. Who knows, it could change their mind.

I had an H3 when i took the test at MEPs , Also the last time I had a hearing test the specialist said that my loss was above the speech threshold, apparently that means nothing but I will try my hardest to get in . I will not be content with myself unless I give it my all. Thanks for all the posts, if you guys have any other advice please post it.

Quite simply, hearing loss is one of the things the VA pays out the most in claims for.

That having been said, unless you can improve your score on the hearing test, NO waiver will be granted. The military (not just Marines but all branches) is one of the most destructive places to hearing. Chances are if your hearing is that bad now, it's unlikely it'll get better, and the military won't take any more chances in making it worse.

Bottom line, unless you can re-take the testand score in the "Level I" area, you'll be unable to enlist.
