Family: Brittany Murphy was ill days before death

http://i.usatoday.net/life/_photos/2009/12/21/murphyx.jpg (javascript:;)

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The unexpected death of 32-year-old Brittany Murphy, who gained fame in such movies as 8 Mile and Just Married (http://content.usatoday.com/topics/topic/Just+Married), appeared to be from natural causes but police are investigating, officials said.

Murphy's family told Los Angeles officials the actress was ill with flu-like symptoms in the days before her death.

Murphy died about 10 a.m. Sunday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (http://content.usatoday.com/topics/topic/Cedars-Sinai+Medical+Center) in Los Angeles, according to the hospital.

She was transported to the medical center after the Fire Department responded to a call at 8 a.m. at the home she shared with her husband, British screenwriter Simon Monjack, in the Hollywood Hills (http://content.usatoday.com/topics/topic/Hollywood+Hills).

Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter said Murphy apparently collapsed in the bathroom, and authorities were looking into her medical history.

An official cause of death may not be determined for some time, since toxicology tests will be required, but "it appears to be natural," Winter said. He said an autopsy was planned for Monday or Tuesday.

Los Angeles police have opened an investigation into Murphy's death, Officer Norma Eisenman said. Detectives and coroner's officials were at Murphy and Monjack's home Sunday afternoon but did not talk to reporters. Paparazzi were camped outside the multistory home, located above the Sunset Strip.

Neighbor Clare Staples said she saw firefighters working to resuscitate the actress Sunday morning. She said Murphy was on a stretcher.

Murphy's husband, wearing pajama bottoms and no shoes, appeared "dazed" as firefighters tried to save her, Staples said. "It's just tragic," she added.

Murphy's publicist, Nicole Perna, said in a statement: "In this time of sadness, the family thanks you for your love and support. It is their wish that you respect their privacy."

Messages left for Murphy's manager and agent by The Associated Press were not immediately returned.

Murphy's father, Angelo Bertolotti, said he learned of her death from his son, the actress's brother, and was stunned.

"She was just an absolute doll since she was born," Bertolotti said from his Branford, Fla., home. "Her personality was always outward. Everybody loved her — people that made movies with her, people on a cruise — they all loved her. She was just a regular gal."

He said he hadn't heard much about the circumstances of Murphy's death. Bertolotti divorced her mother when Murphy was young and hadn't seen Murphy in the past few years.

"She was just talented," Bertolotti said. "And I loved her very much."
Born Nov. 10, 1977, in Atlanta, Murphy grew up in New Jersey and later moved with her mother to Los Angeles to pursue acting.

Her career started in the early 1990s with small roles in television series, commercials and movies. She is best known for parts in Girl, Interrupted (http://content.usatoday.com/topics/topic/Girl,+Interrupted), Clueless (http://content.usatoday.com/topics/topic/Clueless) and 8 Mile.

Her on-screen work had lessened of late, but Murphy's voice gave life to numerous animated characters, including Luanne Platter on more than 200 episodes of Fox's King of the Hill (http://content.usatoday.com/topics/topic/King+of+the+Hill) and Gloria the penguin in the 2006 feature Happy Feet (http://content.usatoday.com/topics/topic/Happy+Feet).

She is due to appear in Sylvester Stallone (http://content.usatoday.com/topics/topic/People/Celebrities/Actors,+Agents/Sylvester+Stallone)'s upcoming film, The Expendables, set for release next year.

Her role in 8 Mile led to more recognition, Murphy told AP in 2003. "That changed a lot," she said. "That was the difference between people knowing my first and last name as opposed to not."

Murphy credited her mother, Sharon, with being a key to her success.

"When I asked my mom to move to California, she sold everything and moved out here for me," Murphy said. "I was really grateful to have grown up in an environment that was conducive to creating and didn't stifle any of that. She always believed in me."

She dated Ashton Kutcher (http://content.usatoday.com/topics/topic/People/Celebrities/Actors,+Agents/Ashton+Kutcher), who costarred with Murphy in 2003's romantic comedy "Just Married."

Kutcher sent a message on Twitter (http://content.usatoday.com/topics/topic/Twitter+Inc) Sunday morning about Murphy's death: "2day the world lost a little piece of sunshine," Kutcher wrote. "My deepest condolences go out 2 Brittany's family, her husband, & her amazing mother Sharon."

Funeral arrangements have not been announced.

In California, the county medical examiner has the final say on autopsies based on state statute, not the family. From what I've heard and read, an autopsy is legally required in this case.

ACCESS EXCLUSIVE: Brittany Murphy's Husband Speaks Out: 'My World Was Destroyed'

Just one day after the death Brittany Murphy (http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/contributor/1800018897), her husband Simon Monjack has spoken out exclusively to Access Hollywood about the untimely loss of his wife.

"My world was destroyed yesterday," an emotional Monjack told Access Hollywood on Monday afternoon.

Following the news of the actress' death at the age of 32 on Sunday, the Hollywood community offered an outpouring of love and condolences for Murphy - and one message, in particular, was very moving to Monjack.

"I loved what Ashton [Kutcher] wrote on Twitter. It was comforting to me," Monjack told Access Hollywood, adding he did not know his wife's former "Just Married (http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1808411901/info/)" co-star personally. "I couldn't have said it better."

The message posted by Ashton (http://www.accesshollywood.com/stars-react-to-the-death-of-brittany-murphy_article_26945) read, "2day the world lost a little piece of sunshine. My deepest condolences go out 2 Brittany's family, her husband, & her amazing mother Sharon. see you on the other side kid."

As far as what happened inside the actress' home early Sunday, when Murphy was found unresponsive in the shower, Monjack said up to that point, it had just been "a regular day."

"[Her mother] Sharon went into the bathroom because she had been in there a long time. Her mom screamed for me and I ran. Then called 911," he revealed.

As previously reported on AccessHollywood.com, Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a 911 call (http://www.accesshollywood.com/brittany-murphy/brittany-murphy-dead-at-32_article_26941)from the home at 8 AM on Sunday and eventually transported Murphy to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. She was pronounced dead at the facility at 10:04 AM.

While LA County Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter told Access Hollywood the actress' death "appears to be natural at this time" on Sunday, an autopsy was being conducted on Monday to determine the exact cause of death.

With regards to the coroner noting she may have suffered from flu-like symptoms in the days leading up to her death, Monjack admitted Murphy had been sick - but it did not seem like it was anything serious.

"She had laryngitis," he said, noting she had seen a doctor. "She had been tired at the end of the year. She had made a couple movies."

In his interview with Access, Monjack - who married Murphy in 2007 -- took exception to the idea that his wife may have been linked to people who were bad influences on her.

"I don't know why anyone would think that," he said. "She found love. We found love. Brittany didn't get to where Brittany was with anyone controlling her... Brittany was Brittany."

She was pretty famous, corporal. She just wasn't big on the tabloids. You probably have seen one of her movies, and just didn't realize it was her. Sin City, 8 Mile, Don't Say A Word (like the Marines upthread said), and she was the voice of Luanne in King of the Hill, and a few more movies your lady may have made you watch.

My first thought was anorexia destroyed her body... will have to wait and see what the autopsy reveals. I liked her movies... but think her choice of husband was.... kind of weird.

RIP Brittany
